Okay hyland hills tell me everything.

I am not a novice to the lore here. but I've spent 4 days career watching the cam, 2 full work days. I've seen prob every hyland edit ever dropped. I need to know more. But I'm from the west and am so interested in this place.

1. How fucking awesome is that place, like 9-9 local spot with a fast tow to a park??!

2. how is everyone not a rail god coming out of there, like that access, is so crazy?

3. its in the city, its def a daycare spot, but does it have culture? It seems like it does. Based on observations, its almost like highschool/middleschool crews who have fun.

4. What is bad about it? besides the kids, temps and lips?

5. is parking fucked, is the commute fucked, is this not like a legit everyday "I'm there" spot?

Just please tell me about hyland hills because honestly I wish I grew up there. It looks so god damn fun and just laps laps laps.

1. Yes

2. Most people are good at rails. The MSU railjam has been won by Hyland skiers 3 years in a row now. Each generation of hyland skiers gets better at rails. There’s now like 12 year olds doing 4 ons and cork 7s in competition.

3. Big daycare vibes especially on the weekends and weekday nights. It’s not only high/middle school kids who have fun they just tend to be the largest demographic in the park. You definitely get used to it, kids don’t usually bother anyone they’re just tryna rip. There’s strong culture but it’s hard to explain.

4. If you care about people hitting a feature literally right after and potentially hitting you if you fall then do not ski hyland. If you care about getting cut off by 15 year olds who are much better than you I would not recommend either. Temps can be bad, lips are usually bad, big jumps are hit or miss depends on the year. Rent-a-cops can sometimes be real assholes. I’ll say some goods things: cheap decent food, affordable passes, awesome current park crew, great for socializing, nice chalet right at the bottom of the park, park is empty during the day M-F, etc.

5. Parking is actually never an issue, there’s a satellite lot where shuttles pick you up and bring you to the hill. Once that fills up there’s another lot about a mile or two from the hill that they use as extra. Most people’s commutes are less than 30 minutes, mine in HS was about 15 mins maybe 20 with traffic. If you live east of hyland you might have worse issues with traffic. If you wanted to you could ski there every day, as a teenager i’d manage up to 4-5 days a week sometimes.

I love hyland and most hyland skiers would agree.

Not a Hyland local but I like to get there a few times throughout the winter. Im definitely more of a ski it during the day when the kids arent there type. Dont hit jumps really but the jumps there are way better than my local. Rails are the biggest draw to me. Seems like every time I go I have a sick day and progress/get good clips. Lips can get kinda fucked but oh well. Culture is kinda like a melting pot, youve got the hyland locals that run together and theres often other groups of riders from other hills on good days and then of course all the kids. There park crew is sick and is always changing shit, especially this season they went away from strict tiers to a more flowy park and it is so fun

What is the culture like? I know its hard to explain but would be appreciated. Do a lot of kids just skip school when they get a car? Like im watching this kid with brown big strides on the cam just lapping, he seems solo, whats going through his mind. He also just laced a clean handdrag b3 on the knuckle as im writing this.

Also im super impressed by the coordination on the rope tow, everyone seems to be aware of everyone else but just slots in and goes, if someone falls the rope gets pulled around them.

Plus I like when Euro crews pull up to it and just have their mind blown by how American it is lol

I kinda have my mind blown, im just a utah skier and like at a point looking at hyland, its probably is better for progression than woodies,pc,btown. But I doubt there is like ski academy's or serious coaching.

1. greatest place on earth

2.everyone is and every year kids keep getting better

3. you will see everyone from 7 year olds just starting to ski to pros all in the same park on the same rope so it gets very hectic especially on weekends and at night. there's crews of everyone out here

4.the lips get used so hard with huge ruts. the jumps arent super good but there still fun depending on the weather. at night there is almost always huge bumps from people stopping making it pretty hard to hit some stuff and have a good line

5.parking ain't bad except on some weekends

There's like USSSA for the kids but not a real coaching or academy vibe. But the young locals there are crazy so many random kids are just doing dub for the first time off the big jumps. The jetskis dudes were there earlier this winter and kids were throwing wild stuff too

The ropes are perfect, but the only issue is one of the main jumps has a bad landing sometimes (in my experience)

Anywhere you can ski at night is going to have a culture. Not trying to take anything away from hyland cuz it's very obviously special but I feel like anywhere open at night is where you tend to meet the most passionate people and it develops into culture from there

All the Hylanders in Bozeman love the place and have shared about the culture and it really seems incredible. It’s awesome how close homies are there and how good at skiing they become. Gotta visit someday. As Jems said, the MSU railjam has been won by a Hyland skier every year and we have people here who ski park from all over…

This is too epic! Like lemmings just latching onto the tow and go round and round :)

Damn now a kid got smoked and the yellow vests are out to get him off the slope!

Kind of, I actually skipped school once when I had the option to ski hyland. Most generations (kids up to 3-4 years apart in age) end up being really close and bond through skiing. There’s a natural competition to get better at skiing than your friends or peers. You’re able to see amazing amateur or even pro skiers literally right in front of you and talk to them easily. Small parks usually have the close quarters vibe of a skatepark which I really love. Everyone stops at the top of the park and will usually group up and talk, then take turns hitting different lines. Hyland is not that much different than other rope park centric resorts, it just happens to be in a population center giving it much more traffic. There’s a certain flow and some unwritten rules most rope tow frequenters learn overtime. I believe growing up skiing in rope parks gives you a little more awareness than most due to the busy chaotic nature of the park, especially places like hyland, elm, and troll.

Thank you very much. small skatepark vibe gives off good feelings.

I think he's actually really good at making the type of content he does. Promotes positivity and doesn't do annoying ass influencer things. Way better than Alex Hackels recent activity

Honestly yeah, he portrays snow sports positively and is somewhat entertaining while also not being too corny.

He does only go to hyland during the daytime on weekdays though which is very different than hyland past 4pm

Hyland Hills Ski Area sounds like an amazing spot with convenient hours and quick access to a park for skiing or snowboarding.

The easy access might contribute to a high skill level among riders, creating a reputation for producing rail gods.

Being in the city and having a daycare vibe doesn't necessarily mean it lacks culture; it could be a vibrant community, possibly with a mix of age groups enjoying the slopes.

Downsides might include crowded conditions due to popularity, challenging weather conditions, and potential issues with the terrain or features.

The parking situation and commute may vary, impacting the everyday feasibility of making it a regular spot.

Overall, while it seems like a fantastic place, like any location, it likely has its pros and cons depending on individual preferences and priorities.

Chat gpt loves using terminology like rail gods

Only been a few times but I'm a big fan. Crazy how well they pack so many features into a small space, and I love how frequently they change it up.

Would be perfect if they could make the big jump less of a cheese wedge. I know they have G team trying dubs and need a quick lippy jump, but if they lengthened the take-off and made it more of a table-top or step-up it would be a dream lapping that on a rope. (probably safer too)

Hot take but they need to expand the park. This place isn't going to get less crowded... bring back the park on Skyline where the current race tow is. I'd say it's a better fall line for the jump over there too. (where will racing go? idk I like my plan)

There's only been one time hyland had a step up jump as far as I can recall and that was 2016-17 season which I doubt we'll ever see again. It's so simple for them to just make a massive ramp with a gap, if 13 year old skiers are doing corks and dub backs off them then I see no issue. I actually much prefer hyland's janky jump setups as opposed to parks like Big Sky where their jumps have such excessive launch angles. They had a jumpline where the old nybora jumps used to be a few years ago. I doubt the park will expand as ski racers legitimately use that side of the hill during weekday practices. While the parks are pretty crowded you kind of just get used to it, I don't really think it gets any worse year by year, but of course I don't know since I don't live in MN anymore.

I went for the first time ever this year on Christmas Eve when it was 50° and it was about to rain. Weird icy top layer over spring slush .

I believe this too, The first time I ever went into Valhalla at Trollhaugen I was scared. It was a preseason Saturday. Soooo many people I just stood there frozen watching everyone.

Now of course I'm used to it, you just know where people are going and what they're going to do. Especially if it's your local place, you just know where that snowboarder is going and unconsciously can predict where people are going based on what they're working on that day. It's like you can Feel when someone is beside or behind you .

Now go into the small park, all bets are off. The small ones are so unpredictable it's dangerous!

I haven't been to Hyland during a true busy day, but as Trollhaugen being my regular spot, and having been at Elm on busy days I'm sure it's quite similar. Especially on those spring sunny days.

Its the skatepark/daycare vibe. to snake or be snaked. Great spot to drop in for a couple hours.

I spent a ton of my adult life here and yeah, it accelerates your skills, but also with all the homies around. best vibes.

parking in the satellite lot and taking the shuttle is a wild experience for such a small hill but between the parks and race hills, if you are in a program. you thrive. if you just go to rip, you have a blast.

my only beef is that instead of being independent, its run by the park district which brings up weird bigger more corporate decisions.

blessed to have grown up there. They named a feature after me even!

Now it's packed but the shred-o-meter is down significantly from yesterday. One unsupervised child in a blue jacket is causing trouble at the rope. He is only doing half the hill too.

Now a oneplanker ran into him on the rope!

Edit:

His oneplanking dad (with GoPro on helmut) came over and fetched him. No more tow roping for the 5year old :/

Forgot to give more details about Hyland 's sister place in the northern metro--Elm Creek--is just as awesome. They're owned by the same park district and share park features. Occasionally you'll see features from the other place mixed in.

It's a lot smaller at a whopping 90 vertical feet. They have one run, tubing, and lessons and all that but Its really known for their cross country trails and what we care about here , the park. All rope tow , no chairlifts. It's small but they pack a lot in that small space. I appreciate the vibe there. It's beginner friendly, not as intense as Troll or Hyland can get. I also like that it's easy to get to, closer for me than Hyland, that's why I've never gone there. They have the same parking and shuttle bus situation but they don't seem to cycle through as fast as the Hyland busses did the day I went.

I'm planning on going to Elm tomorrow.

Alright read my name and believe what I say:

1: it’s core as fuck

2: steez is everywhere

3: Willie borm

4: love the rope tow but kinda heavy sometimes

5: best place in Minnesota and gets a park refresh every 1 to 2 weeks (it alternates big park to small park)

6: really nice park crew and possibly the best features in minnesota

7: i pull up almost every weekend and that is probably the biggest upside of it all

It seems like hyland was a big place in some of y’all’s lives, a visit, or just an anomaly to us outsiders.

Reading everyone’s words of love, criticism and back to love is inspiring.

I, a mediocre western skier, am inspired by everyone who touched the rope at hyland.

Haven’t been in a couple yrs but I just feel super old when I do go back. Doesn’t seem like anyone over 18 skis there anymore. When I was coming up you had 1817 crew and Allan Lamb types always there being elders but now it seems I am the last OG

Why him out of everyone that has made Hyland videos? I'd guess he's not atone to the culture as he is not from there.
