Go to the south island for sure, Ruapehu isn't that great, the south island is sooooo much damn better, send me a personal message sometime and I'll tell you all about and try hook you up with some rad peeps.

Hell yes North Island sucks!!!!

Hell Down here in Queenstown/Wanaka we had the only pourpose built terrain park ski aera in the southern hemesphere...... Need i say More????

 
It's sad but true, Ruapehu isn't that flash... weather is always crap and if you go for a weekend, you're usually lucky if you get one day. But all that aside, spring skiing is pretty good with heaps of backcountry to explore (especially out either side of Turoa), but I really would stick with the South Island!!!

I wish I could ski ALL the time in winter - instead of just most of the time...
 
Oops, I forgot, Turoa has a pretty good terrain park though (except for the halfpipe which was only ever decent when they were having a snowboard contest but otherwise they would let it fall apart - but that may have changed)
