/images/flash_video_placeholder.pngI was wondering if you guys would critique this video. I already know that it gets a tad shaky at sometimes, so other than stabilization tear it apart with criticism.

i think its a pretty good standard edit i would say that it would be worth trying to film jumps a little closer in and maybe even do some follows on jumps by skiing from the left then under the jump itself, also panning the camera up and down makes things feel a little smoother. some of the jumps like the first switch 9 or whatever feel a little far away thats all

Yea I was going to try to have moving jump shots, but I was also trying to get a lot of shots of a bunch of different skiers. And yeah i did increase the mbs on the Panansonic GH2 and I am loving it.

Not sure if this is possible with the way the jumps are setup but if you can get a little of the takeoff/inrun instead of a body just coming off a kicker

It wasn't bad but it just wasn't interesting...get a variety of shots because all those shots were just you right next to the rider either follow-camming or standing on the knuckle...do so long lens work or something, b-roll....just add variety or it gets boring.....and the stabilization like you mentioned and also stop crushing your blacks

Yeah i want to get more b-roll for my next edit, because I am well aware that I need it to variate my edits from just follows. I also just bought a Minolta 50mm 1.4 so i am hyped to get more b-roll shots with that lens in my lens arsenal. What do exactly mean by crushing the blacks because I barely touched the footage, it was mostly right off the camera.

I think it's quite good but it's long to watch, there's just too many shots one after the othe. I'd add some broll between every 2-3 tricks and let the edit flow a bit sometimes (for example for the jumps just follow cam and leave about 5 seconds of runup before the jump). Also sometimes it's better for a skier to have only less tricks but nice ones than adding a bunch of not so good tricks just to fill the time.

I thought it was nice, that gh2 footage is hawt, but the stabilization issues were kinda distracting. To me it looks like you have to firm a grip of the end of the glidecam, maybe loosen up your fingers just to aim a little smoother.

About the stabilization I know it kinda got sketchy in some places, it was mainly because my camera is too light for my glide cam so I had to add weight to the top with tiles. Hopefully this does the trick! And more cowbell well be added

yeah don't do any of this.

but it looks like you have your camera figured out well, just use it more effectively. apart from the shakiness, it seemed like there was no rhyme or reason to where the skier was in the frame. also some b-roll and some slow/fast motion (some edits can work without it) really helps as well.
