Obama Wins Nobel...Blasphemy

OSLO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for giving the world "hope for a better future" and striving for nuclear disarmament, in a surprise award that drew both warm praise and sharp criticism.

The decision to bestow one of the world's top accolades on a president less than nine months into his first term, who has yet to score a major foreign policy success, was greeted with gasps of astonishment from journalists at the announcement in Oslo.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." But critics -- especially in parts of the Arab and Muslim world -- called its decision premature.

The first African-American to hold his country's highest office, Obama, 48, has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January.

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation.

While the decision won praise from statesmen like Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev, both former Nobel laureates, it was also attacked in some quarters as hasty and undeserved.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip and opposes a peace treaty with Israel, said the award was premature at best.

"Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward," said Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri. "Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace. And he has not done anything to ensure justice for the sake of Arab and Muslim causes."

"EMBARRASSING JOKE"

Issam al-Khazraji, a day laborer in Baghdad, said: "He doesn't deserve this prize. All these problems -- Iraq, Afghanistan -- have not been solved...The man of 'change' hasn't changed anything yet."

Liaqat Baluch, a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, a conservative religious party in Pakistan, called the award an embarrassing "joke."

But the chief Palestinian peace negotiator, Saeb Erekat, welcomed it and expressed hope that Obama "will be able to achieve peace in the Middle East."

Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland rejected suggestions from journalists that Obama was getting the prize too early, saying it recognized what he had already done over the past year.

Seriously? He won the pirize for giving us "hope". HOLY SHIT. What are you're thoughts on this?? I know i think it is absolutely rediculous for him to win a Nobel.

yeah you didn't hear? you dont have to do anything to win the nobel peace prize anymore, they are basically looking for an excuse to give it away now-a-days

and now for a rough Kanye joke

"Obama I'm real happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish but...Bob Hope was one of the best hope's of all time...just sayin"

Too bad the committee that decided this didn't poll the american population. Actually, the worlds for that matter. Everyone hates Obama.

YES! +10

I dont see how a man, who's barely been in office for 10 months, wins the Nobel for completely reversing the greatest economic system in the world. He won it for "Spreading the Wealth". Sounds Socialist, even borderline Communist eh?

SN: All the Conservatives and Reactionaries are gonna get wrecked when we post comments like this.

i'm not too knowledgeable in important people but my mom asked me who i thought would win the nobel and i just said obama cause he is the only important person i know of that changed the world. what do you know

How..did Obama change the world..? I don't hate the guy but he hasn't really done too much..not gonna lie.

I do think that the tone of things has changed since he's taken office, and I'm an Obama supporter overall, though I disagree with him on some issues. He's trying his best, and it's tough to expect everything to be fixed in the 9 months he's been in office.
But I do agree that the Nobel was somewhat premature, and would be better reserved if he demonstrated after a few years in office that something tangible had really changed. Given that, the Nobel committee is taking its last shot at the Bush administration (Carter 2002, Gore 2007), and trying to influence politics.
But still, I congratulate Obama on his prize, let's see if he really lives up to the promise. I hope so.

Just goes to show how big of an impact he has on other parts of the world, namely Europe. Yes it was probably premature, but they do have a point. No one has inflamed the hearts of so many people in a long time. Everyone might not think he is a good person, but he still has brought American politics to an international level it hasn't really been at before.

I don't really think he deserved to win but I can completely understand why they did it.

europe loves obama. aka the nobel prize panel.
the nobel prize was created in guilt by the creator of dynamite and ballistics anyway. the man by result has killed the most people in the entire world created a peace prize to get some bad feelings off his back. most ironic thing ever.

the problem is he wont, because hes too got damn full of himself.

congrats obama, responsible for the two most deadly months in the war.

but hes real busy, with all that socializing and all those vacations to care.

Nothing like NS politics, I swear....gotta love a bunch of narrowminded teenagers arguing about stuff they don't really have a grasp on and refusing to see merit in anyone else's viewpoint!

yea no kidding... i cant wait to tell this to all of my redneck friends..

this is the most redic thing.. why didnt al gore get one.. or clinton... like wtf

as much as i love obama i dont think he shouldve won the nobel. i feel like he still has a lot of shit to do. maybe they shouldve given the american people a nobel collectively for nominating a president of color ahha

I really fucking hope that the joke you just made wasn't one of those serious beliefs with a awkward "haha" at the end to make it seem like a kind of joke.

actually most of the world is relieved that america has a president that will confront the issues of the world and treat the leaders of other nations will respect... what they mean by saying he gave the world hope is that he showed the world that not all americans are jackasses like Bush. i think you can really really that Bush for Obama getting the peace prize. after that asshole Obama seems like a saint.... i embrace the karma rape

Maybe the Minnesota Vikings should get the Lombardi Trophy right now because they have the potential to be really good and have excited many people that good things might happen.

I do not think he deserves this award so early.

Yes he may be trying his hardest to fix the countries problems.

Yes, he may look good to the rest of the world but he is not entitled to this award BEFORE his presidency is over.

Its great that he wants to aspire his dreams of fixing the country but, correct me if im wrong, no other president has received the Nobel Peace Price after just 2 weeks into office before the candidates nominations.

i dont know where the fuck you live, but for the most part america still loves obama, and the rest of the world (by which i mean Europe) likes him even more

obama, proved to the world that peace is possible, when he was elected a black president and not assasinated.

I'm going to be gone from my computer for the rest of the day but someone please tear this kid a new asshole. Thanks in advance.

Firstly, his people don't even like him. He has an approval index of -9 last time I checked (pretty bad). I think it was Nobel Peace Prize's way of pushing him to have a peaceful resolution (with the war meeting tomorrow I think about what to do in Afghanistan). Honestly though, Nobel is such a joke, fucking Al Gore won it. Fucking Yasser Arafat won it. He has done jack shit and gets praised for it. He was nominated for the prize in February. What? Are you serious? When he had been in office for one month? He hadn't been in senate for even one term. All he's done is say the exact same thing that Bush said he'd do, and hasn't done anything. What's the difference between Obama and every other president? Oh, that's right, he's black.

better than having a president that most americans AND all of the world hate, eh? and i think this is great, for the record.

one month after september 11th? of course his approval rating was through the roof. in such a traumatizing time for our nation we rallied around our leader who, at the time, seemed to be doing the right thing. not really a fair comparison.

Whoever thinks Obama deserved this award needs to be shot. I dont care what your political views are, this is just ridiculous. He has done nothing. This just spits in the face of people like Gandhi/the dalai lama etc. people who actually deserve the award.

I know, I'm just proving the point that Obama hasn't done anything yet. Bush's approval rating was 90% little did we know he would throw us into the biggest deficit (besides Obama now) ever. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we don't know what Obama's going to do yet, and at the same time, so many people are on his dick. I mean giving him a Nobel Peace Prize? He just hasn't done anything yet (Except throwing us another $1.2 trillion in debt, in less than a term and TALK about fixing all these problems but never DOES anything).

not saying that he was the best choice, but who (in the last year) do you think has inspired more people with a hope of resolving world issues?

also, in response to the rasmussen poll above...

There has already been what? Three or four people nailed for plans to kill him.

I wouldn't go as far to say that this is blashpemy but I think it is really REALLY premature. The part that makes it feel premature for me isn't that I think he hasn't done anything (I am right of center and don't like the guy but he at least in some form is turning the country around a bit) it is just that the nominations were due in early EARLY November. That was just a little over two weeks after he got to office. And as far as I know when he was a Senator (someone correct me if I am wrong, and not by yelling at me) he was organizing community service projects but he only served in the Senate for like two years, one of which was spent campaigning.

I think this is really REALLY premature. And this prize, is total bullshit stupid some of the people that have won it. Granted, many have deserved it, some, it looks more like a popularity contest.

setting arguments aside:

I watched the speech on Fox, then switched over to CNN when the speech was over (CNN's audio was off of the picture at the time and it was pissing me off, ahah) to get the response.

From what ive gathered so far:

I have not heard reports on the American peoples response.

Kenya- supports obama

Egypt- thinks its too soon to hand out the prize to obama

Europe- did not catch the whole segment but i gathered they approved

Im watching CNN right now and Gibbs is answering the reporters questions. that guy has a shitty job. answering all the stupid questions that he just has to repeat over and over again.

there is going to be arguments on both sides of the political spectrum as arguments on both sides of the world (depending on the view points of that country)

i think its great that the world is trying to move towards peace but to give it to a president that has only said he is going to do something before he actually accomplishes his goal is confusing to me.

but its nice to see that the U.S. is still a world power in the eyes of the world community. maybe just the idea of "obama" makes him stronger than his future, actual actions.

Maybe in a decade he could have been given the award if he ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING.

Man hasn't done shit to deserve something like that, to be akin to others who have deserved it.

When is the Rasmussen poll from? Because as of yesterday, according to Associated Press - GFK polls, he is up to 56% approval.
