Oakley Drops THALL for Riff Raff

couldn't give less of a shit about riff raff but its a tragedy Oakley stopped making the eyeshades after the brief 30 year anniversary and followed up with those weird/busy looking windjackets. The paint splatter color of those jawbreakers would be dope on a nice clean pair of eyeshades

Peep the later half of this edit boyos. Riff Raff and skiing is like bread and butter.

And Spy gave Gus a pro model - of course it's pink and has sparkles on it - when the dude hardly ever skis and does literally nothing to promote our sport to his platform. Meanwhile Tanner, a straight beast that is the epitome of freeskiing and lives and dies with this shit, gets cut. What a time!!

I can't believe I haven't heard of this and needed to google it. On the contrary, Gus has done a lot to contribute to skiing, and has owned up to his mistakes in our small community here on NS, unlike many other athletes no matter the sport or supporters - but THIS, now this is something. But, if it brings more people to skiing, then *shrug,* and Gus brings that demographic.

Although, it doesn't even come close to what Oakley did and HOW they did it to Tanner, by pushing away Tanner fans even further from the brand and creating a #cancelOakley culture out of all of us.

I saw you wrote Spy and almost lost my shit, but I'm assuming you meant smith, which is what the photo shows as well.

Actually I would say being a talented athlete who represents a step in the right direction towards fighting discrimination pays off. Nobody would sponsor Gus if he was a dick but because he makes a large effort to promote good causes he is highly regarded. It's the same situation with Nike and Colin Kaepernick. They don't promote Colin because of his skin color, they promote him because he is an activist against racial injustice.

Except Pit Viper doesnt make outerwear. I'd love to see Tanner on Smith/Dakine

Don't think T-Hall is worried about outerwear considering Armada makes amazing outerwear. The quality on my Armada jacket is so much higher than the Oakley jacket I owned.

So does being able to do a 720 switch up at the age of 16.

It's crazy how much I've been agreeing with your posts lately this doesn't feel real.

Adding to this, Gus made it before he came out of the closet. It might've made him slightly more marketable to brands and different demographics but that's it. He's always been an insanely talented skier. Relentless training, hard word and dedication is why he really made it.

I said it in the news post, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if ARMADA made a goggle

huh? idk about gus's filming situation but he skied contests like a mad man last year, slope AND pipe at the highest level (does anyone else even do both anymore?). he was super beat up by the time he was skiing Olympic slope

think whatever you want about gus off the slopes but he is one of the best park skiers alive and clearly works super hard for it. don't be mad at him because Smith treats him differently than Oakley treated tanner, that's totally unfair

I get what you're saying. And I don't mean to take away from Gus' talents as a skier by any means - I have long said on here that when it comes to riding a terrian park, there is probably no one better and more technically sound than Gus (although I'm not sure that's still the case - what up A Hall).

With that said - its more than obvious why Smith just gave him a pro model. If it was about skiing, they would have done that years ago when he was a top name in our sport with film segments, edits, tons of competitions, just an all around mainstream household name in skiing. It says everything that they choose to give him a pro model now, when he hardly skis, hasn't released ski content in years, rarely posts about skiing on his social media, and honestly isn't as competive anymore (didn't ride pipe at X-Games, didn't ride big air at X -Games, 6/8 in slope at X-Games, 12th place in Olympics). Gus strictly skis comps for his sponsors. It doesn't seem like he even just goes skiing for fun, to busy acting like a celebrity or something. My guess is Smith, gave him that because he has a million IG followers and a platform. I'm sure his contract says he has to tag them in a post or two a year... he just did and it got 85,000 likes, which is over 50% of Smith's total followers. Is anyone that is actually serious about skiing going to rock those pink donut goggles or whatever? Maybe a few middle school aged gaper girls, but overall Smith isn't looking to appeal to the more dedicated skier with this. If they were, they'd probably be trying to work with a guy like Tanner.

Brings me back to why it's disappointing to see someone like Tanner lose his pro model and sponsor. He still not only films but puts out industry leading segments/movies that are instant classics. Dude is about to start competing in Big Mountain, and is still super relevant with the park scene and younger generation cursing it at Kimbo Sessions and shit. He is fully committed to the sport, the lifestyle, the community, etc. I mean what more do I need to say about the guy, you all already know. Just kind of a shame to see Gus get rewarded with a pro model at this point in his career when skiing is only comps to appease sponsors to him, and a guy like Tanner.

Idk, just my take.

I think your critique of Gus is unjustified. Dude is absolutely crazy on skis, sure I wish he filmed more but whatever that's his choice, and he's worked super hard to get where he is. Doing x and Olympics, slope AND pipe, that's fuckin crazy, that's the opposite of taking the easy route

Of course Smith cares mostly because he has a huge following now. That's how sponsorship works. He's put freeskiing on the radar of tons of people and I don't give a shit if they can't slide a box, gapers subsidize the entire sport for ""real"" skiers like you and me; always have, always will

Ski boss is ski boss-- you're preaching to the choir on that. It's a shame that Oakley dropped him, its like spaghetti broke up with meatballs, and it seems like weird timing but they also sponsored him for almost 2 decades through thick and thin (to say the least). And we only have one side of the story on that

Don't fault Gus for getting his (from a different company), he's earned it with blood and sweat just like tanner has. Sure he's a little out there, but it's freeskiing. I like that you have people like Gus, people like david wise (family man), people like tanner (skiing archfiend)... all different types of folks all with a crazy passion for the same sport. If we were all the same, the sport would be boring as hell, all the same dudes doing the same shit wearing the same clothes.

Don't worry about Gus doing his thing, that's what this shit is about. Sorry to get all preachy on you but if you like tanner so much you realize that skiing and life in general isn't about pitching down the middle and worrying that every single person likes you

Haha yikes. Did not state Oakley was going anywhere - they have a plethora of sports and people they support outside of skiing. It is about the amount of kids that are upset over, again, HOW Tanner got cut that is bringing about an over-all gloom that we’ve seen portrayed by skiers in our genre over the past week or so, creating the distrust of Oakley.
