NS should advertise the forums on their Instagram

We can all agree that the forums on here are far past their golden age. The culture may have changed since then but the freeskiing community has always remained tight and we continue to put out really innovative content. There's lots of discussion about why we're losing users on the forums, even from eheath and bishop, and we never really seem to have a good answer except that newschoolers is clearly having the most success through their instagram account. I'm looking through their account right now and they don't even mention the forums, which are really the root of most freeskiing content. I think if NS did a little more to advertise the forums and make them seem appealing we would gain a lot of members without really having to change anything. Sure we'd get some jerrys but what would this site be without them?

tl;dr: I'm tired of seeing people with newschoolers stickers, overcoming my crippling anxiety, and then being told they don't use the site.

They advertise them on their stories from time to time.

But it honestly most ski Gabber content is pretty repetitive, and a lot of content is better off as a news article so it can be written by someone who actually gives a shit.

And 90% of NSG content is absolute shit.

Can you imagine if they advertised the NSG though? “Why is TRVP_ANGEL (dogfart) no longer doing AMAs?”

“HEAVILY MODERATED SAFE SPACE FOR RICH SJWS TO TALK ABOUT HIP HOP AND HOW ALL RACES AND GENDERS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN EVERY WAY”

Good idea. Though, I feel like a lot of people from insta will just come to the forums to start more which ski to buy threads and not use the forums to their full potential

F that, IG ads attract the stupidest of users/consumers (IMO)

I do agree with you but I think there are also a ton of talented skiers that post videos on ig and clearly aren't active here. As someone above said it would definitely suck to have the pages filled with "what ski?" posts but ns is literally a ghost town right now so maybe once those people get accustomed to the etiquette on here we could actually have some productive conversations

It's not just Newschoolers that's dead. Facebook groups/pages collectively killed the golden days of internet message boards regardless of topic.

Forums are dead and it wouldn't be wise to promote unless drastic changes are made to up their appeal

In general, NS should use IG to promote anything that might interest the right ppl on that platform to come here and interact in positive ways. Doesn't really matter if it's forums, news, videos or whatever. I think they do this well enough now except for forums.

One thing to consider when it comes to forums is that direct links to videos and news articles are much easier/safer things to promote but forums are definitely worth it too. Any website can repost a video or news story but NS are the only ones who hold the keys to their own forums. Might take some time to figure out how to do it correctly but probably worth it to promote forums to separate NS from the bunch.

IMO

1. Consolidate the massive amount of sub-forums on the site. Years ago they were all needed but now there's just too many since the internet has evolved.

2. Make the forums a safer place for ski companies and pros to post. When you've done this, promote forums that they post in on IG, Facebook, etc and monitor them for haters. One of the best parts of NS yrs ago was knowing pro athletes and companies would interact regularly. It still happens, just not as much.

3. Perhaps it's time to look at being more of a lightly gated community. Allow anyone in to watch and view things as a guest but make ppl earn it a bit to comment (in forums, under vids, pics, news).

4. Pin "official" threads to the top of forums more often for larger events and other key topics to help encourage discussion.

5. Boost up NS profiles kinda like a LinkedIn for skiers so ppl can promote themselves.

6. Karma point rewards. Link up with companies to give away prizes, NS sticker packs, or discounts % when ppl reach certain karma pt levels. Incentivize that shit.

I like how the insta page has the top rated member clips post every week. Some guys might see that and proceed to make an account and post some stuff hoping to be featured.

Honestly I remember skiing up to someone decked out with NS stickers in like 2008 and asking if they knew how to get to Chad's and they looked at me like I was insane. Asked a more answerable question next like "yo, NS?" and he was like "oh, no I don't go on there".

The stickers have always reached further than the core group of people using the forums.

Not sure what it is but maybe it's that nowadays everyone knows what freeskiing is - it's in the olympics. You don't need a special club to be able to talk about it and it doesn't set us apart in society like it seemed to back in the day. As a result maybe there's less draw to spend time on a forum talking to people about skiing online when you could likely find someone in real life to talk to about it?

All this to say that no, I don't think advertising the forums on IG would bring back any sort of "Golden Era". Best to enjoy the memories and embrace everything else a new era brings.
