Greetings to the conservative among us. I have for you a simple question derived from legitimate curiosity.

Why are you conservative?

None of my young conservative friends can give me a straight answer that doesn't involve some sort of mud flinging. Hit ya boy up with some level headed answers

I'm not necessarily conservative but I don't believe its the governments responsibility to be involved in every aspect of life. College loans, social security, police, are good things, but i'm not much for a lot of extra shit. I also don't agree with taxing the rich more (more a fixed rate) , because I view that as punishing success and rewarding laziness. Personal responsibility and free market are good. The government should not be the ass wiper to the nation. Help those who need to be helped, but not those who refuse to help themselves. I'm also pro gun.

and i love this quote. mind you, I am ALL FOR helping people who need it. I have no problem whatsoever having a portion of my paycheck going to that.

"The democracy will cease to exist[/i] when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Because I believe that the government should intervene less in our lives, as in they should back the fuck off. This means both cutting taxes as well as spending programs and giving people more of a say in how they control their own money. Yes, this does not bode well for the poor because they did not save for retirement or they did not work their ass off in school to get a degree. Their are exceptions to this, but being a conservative I understand that we need to be fiscally responsible and not spend our money willy nilly. America has supplied free education and therefore free opportunity for everyone to make a good living, and I believe that it is your own fault if you end up poor with no money or degree. Sure there are some who cannot go to school because they have to take care of their family from the get go and that is why there is a marginal difference between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives to not believe in completely eliminating government expenditure, but reducing it to a point where the poor are not receiving a plethora of free handouts and the money people worked hard for is not being taken away.

they are conservatives because they like to kill there livers with disgusting poison called beer and whiskey and they like shooting people and they are racist close minded bastards who dont like sharing what needs to be shared with everyone and they like stealing gays of there basic rights. one love ganja peace bruddah. replace the guns with blunts and maybe you will see the peaceful side.

because America was built on individuals pursuing their dreams, and excessive taxes and social programs ultimately inhibit this pursuit.

Now that's just the thing. I'm down for minimal government interference in my life. However the conservative republican platform wants to tell me who I can marry, if I knock a girl up that we have to keep that damn thing, and what I can and cannot light on fire and inhale. That is NOT small government.

Free education? what have I been paying 50 grand a year for?

HAHAHAHAHA dood you are dumb. I dont care if it went to his church because in the Mormon church the money actually goes to help other families in the church and to shit that actually matters. 29% of his income...thats what he has given to charities. Obama has given like 1/4 of that. JUsss sayyin.

We need a party with core conservative beliefs minus the abortion, religion, and birth control shit.

Very true, once the handouts mark reaches 50% or higher the party system is done.

Not saying the dual party system isnt fucked but there will be no chance for anyone else.

I do agree that a lot of people thrown in with that 47% actually need and deserve handouts but there are also a lot that dont. Once we hit 50 its over.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the reason we can have public education because of taxes? Frankly I'd be extremely happy to pay the government if it means good public education, roads, etc.. I feel like a lot of conservative views contradict themselves.

Then again I could be wrong, show me if I am....

Because in todays society once the government offers something to the public it can never be taken away without a huge uproar. An entitlement society is very easy to moves towards, and nearly impossible to back away from.

I am an economic conservative because i believe in the free market, and personal responsibility. There is no reason for a program such as social security. People need to save their money for their retirement themselves. You don't deserve retirement, you earn it. Gov. programs such as this simply put our country into debt. Each year social security adds about 90 billion to our national debt. I am not conservative for any social reasons. I believe that government should be involved much less in the market place, and not at all in our social lives. While i do personally believe that abortion is wrong, it is never the governments responsibility to tell someone their own morals. Therefore they shouldn't be involved.

These views align more with libertarianism than republicanism, but libertarian views on foreign policy are a little sketchy.

As well, both my parents are conservative so it's pretty natural that I end up being conservative as well. No Liberal has ever been able to explain to me how they expect to run the economy successfully. Iv'e looked it up, and I just don't get it.

This. Many conservatives claim that liberals buy votes. This is true, but not intentional by liberals.

Their philosophy revolves around gov control and giving things ou, which is why many lower class citizens vote liberally. Hence, the Obamaphone lady.

I'm not conservative because its conservative, I just happen to agree with the vast majority of the values of conservatives in general. I against abortions and sex before marriage and gay marriage for example not just because their conservative but because those are my values. If all of these things were generally supported by liberals I would call myself liberal. Just so happens most of my views fall under the conservative umbrella.

wealthy people dont owe the "american public" anything. they worked to get there, they get to keep the reward for it. no one is entitled to it but themselves and whoever they may choose to share it with if they please. there are plenty of jobs out there that people could take, but i guess in their mind taking someone elses money is better than working for it themselves.

yes they do, all Americans before them paid their taxes so rich people could go to school use roads and so on. he owes his country for giving him to opportunity to make his money.

U of O is still technically a public school, despite only receiving a dismal 7% of its funding from the state.

I loved it, but I would never ever pay 40k a year to go there. I really hope your parents are bankrolling you.

pretty much.

If there was a group that was fiscally conservative and socially liberal i'd be stoked.

what is with the religion thing associated with conservatism? conservatism does not = religious and visa versa. there are plenty of religious people that are liberal and there are plenty of religious people that are conservative.

Its just that the majority of Christians (i cant really speak for other religions) are not in favor of abortions etc so Conservationism is classified as religious.

Youre totally right. Rich just dont owe anymore than anyone else. the government provides the same opportunities for all of us. Some of us use those opportunities better than others. They should not be penalized for that

I dislike the fact that social issues have become such a hotbed within the political system, but the economic ideals of conservatives are much more viable for our nation. I know it has only been four years, but the way this recent recession was handled was incorrectly. We are way too far into debt and there's no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Raising taxes won't solve anything, because then it means consumers are spending less and the government is spending or redistributing money in a poor manner.

There are too many public projects, too. Spend a few minutes and read up on the California High Speed rail project. It is a train that will literally go to nowhere, travel at half the speed of an aircraft, yet cost as much as flying does from Los Angeles to San Francisco (Oh, the train will probably only go from Sacramento to Bakersfield). The projected cost is $56 billion dollars and will be halfway completed by 2022 (I think). A private company could complete this project in under a decade for at least two-thrids the cost. There is a reason no private company has taken on this task- it is not economically viable and will always run in the red. Build a new highway instead for less than half the cost. Thanks, a taxpayer.

I've gotta go to class, so I'll leave this post half-fisnished. Hopefully you understand where I was going with it. Complete Laissez Faire is not the answer, but Keynesian economics is a fallacy as well.

I like the middle ground here, but the way our system works someone who is middle ground on a lot of issues wont get elected because they wont be able to win the nomination from either party.

are you against getting the automobile companies up and running again? bailing out the fuck ups in the banking/wall street mess?

give him at least 8 years to clean up the mess the previous 8 caused...

and i sure hope know thinks bush did anything positive for our economy/nation.

this is essentially libertarianism. Their candidate this year was Gary Johnson.their foreign policy is very liberal though.. that doesn't sit well with me personally.

I have a feeling that our generations' conservatives will be much less involved (and not ignorant to the fact that people are different ) in religion, controlling women's vagina (abortion, birth control), and sexual orientation. We were raised in a time where arguments against these issues had been becoming increasingly frowned upon. If we get away from all of these negative aspects of VERY conservative ideology (which people generally associate with the whole right wing) we have a real chance to make things happen. I hope that we can have a fiscally conservative government, keep them from hovering over us, allow people to chose their path, help those who need it, and encourage the principles that built this country in the first place. If we can get away from this whole racist, redneck, bible hugging, anti birth control, gay bashing Conservative shit, it will do loads for the party (if you can even call it conservative after that).
