NS Build me a laptop

Ok so next year I will be going to ISU for ME, and all of the professors I talked to said not to get a Mac. The base price of the Macbook Pro's doesnt get me too stoked either. So NO MACS. The whole net system there is extremely secure and I wont be downloading anything so viruses are not an issue.

As far as specs go, I need at least 500GB hard drive (im thinking about getting externals?) And enough speed to run Autodesk and Solidworks programs without bogging down my computer. Other than that it will be used for music and pictures, no video production or anything of that sort. They also told me to get a really good graphics card.

So if any NSers know anything about laptops other than macbooks, feel free to post or PM me some much needed advice.

Go to apples website. you can get refurbished mac books and mbp's for a lot less, and they are just as good as new

Did you not read the OPs post at all? Or are you just mentally incapable of understanding the written English language?

The very first line.

"Ok so next year I will be going to ISU for ME, and all of the professors I talked to said not to get a Mac"

Does it say anywhere in there that price is an issue?

Ok enough fighting, if you have anything to say about a Mac, then leave my thread. I dont want my thread turning into a cockwaving Macfanboy vs. windowgeek shit circus. If youre gonna fight, do it over PM.

Now back to the topic, I've been eyeing the Sony VAIO and the ASUS. Anyone know anything about them compared to the Gateways and Dells?

oh yeah. My buddy went through 3 sony vaios over the last 2 semesters. Idk if thats his bad luck or something wrong with the computer. Also, from my experience, Dells are poor quality because i have also had problems with them. I would look into HP or Toshiba. From what i have seen those are the most reliable pc's

your an idiot, your judging the computer on looks and virus's. You have to be a jackass to get a virus by going on stupid porn web sites and other stupid shit like that. And who cares WTF they look like put some stickers on it and your good.

you can get iTunes for PC once again your making yourself sound like an idiot and i would say google chrome> safari .

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Viruses are very possible on both OSs. Maybe your friends should stop watching sketchy porn, and get a virus program. The fact that you are spending 200$ or more on a brand name that thrives in video editing and nothing else is great for video editors. But seeing as how the redneck doesnt need it for that, you lose.

Check this site out friend -http://computers.toptenreviews.com/laptops/

lets see here, itunes and safari are free downloads that you can get on a PC are you retarded? and photobooth? big fucking whoop all PCs will have a program just like it. you clearly bought your mac for the wrong reason...bc it looks cool, everyone else has one, and bc you wanted to look cool. nice job man!

My brother gota sony viao and it has broken 6 times in two years, so have a few of his friends Sony Viaos, fuck them.

I got a Dell laptop freshman year (6 years ago) and it is still rocking tough. Had to upgrade the ram and replace the hard drive but not too bad. A lot of people have problems with dells though. I have an acer at work and although it has no style it is powerful and reliable and pretty sure it was cheep.

A college laptop is going to get beat up and be out dated by the time you graduate so I would resist the urge to buy an expensive one. And in my experience you will do very little school work on it. You will do most of your drafting and cad calsses on school computers in a lab. I would almost suggest you get something like a netbook that you can easily bring to class. Really all you will use your computer for is ms office stuff.

Don't get a Vaio, I've never heard anything good about them. Asus do make some quality products, so I'd consider them. I've also only heard good about Toshiba's but have never actually used one for any long period of time.

actually Mac's can get viruses.. you'd just have to try to actually get one.

and what is hands down better in every way than a Mac is Ubuntu

I can't believe you're all taking nomensteven seriously. Couldn't catch the sarcasm?

OP: Look at an HP Envy 15. They're comparable in specs and looks to the 15" MacBook Pro. And they run your coveted Windows 7. (Hint: So do Macs...)

Since you are going into ME. Don't you need a windows computer to run Autodesk? So even if you wanted to you couldn't get a mac?

I would look into Hp. Fairly fast and reliable at a good price. I've had a couple dells in the past they didn't last too long so I would stay away from them. Also look into toshiba.

Have you ever used a Mac? Because i guarantee that if you have then you would never go back to those piece of shit PC's. Mac has the best software and hardware around and no other product can compete to them. I have had my macbook for 5 years now and it is still running just as fast as the day i bought it. Mac > PC

Although i'm all for mac and love mine (hence my icon) if you are going to be an engineering major you are going to want to get a PC. Most, if not all, of the software needed for engineering is only able to run on windows. I just transferred to a huge engineering school and I would say 90% of kids here have PC's, most being engineering majors. As for what PC to actually get, that you'll have to look up on your own or talk to someone who has a good PC. Hope this helps

I am DYING after nomen's posts haha. I don't know which side is funnier; the Mac kids who are agreeing with him, or the kids who are arguing with him.

Hahahahahahahahaahaha.

OP: Give me a price range and I will do work.

I get what he said, but I was pointing out a very legitimate point for the reason he can not get one, thus disproving many comments saying "Get a Mac" in this thread.

When I read the first post I thought that it could sound semi valid and then every subsequent post made me laugh that much harder.

your also a complete moron. His reasons for arguing are that they don't get virus's, they look cool, and you can use programs like safari and iTunes. I said that you can get those programs on a regular PC. So before you come in here running your mouth learn how to read.

Get a Mac, their "stock" graphics card on the regular MacBook is 10x better than most Windows. Also, you can always run crossover for anything you cannot use on your Mac, and the price is worth it, plus, they are extremely sexy.

Also you can just build your PC so it can run Mac and Windows. Macs are just shaudy cases unless you pay the big bucks. When you could just buy a better one for less. Just surf along the internet adventure searching for the cheapest gaming computer. The ones with the most recent awards tend to be the better ones.

I second this. Just bought my second vaio and have nothing but good things to say about them. First was getting older but still works fine. I bought this last one at best buy for $1050 and got a free 2 yr anti virus and an hdmi wireless streamer to my tv (blue deal special or something, only at best buy). It has 500 gig hd, i5, windows 7, blue ray player/burner, hdmi port, 3 usb ports. LOVE IT

HAHAHAHA and learn what sarcasm is before you start calling him an idiot.

nomensteven = EPIC successful troll win.
