Not detuning edges?

Ok so most people detune there edges for rails but I feel like when I get new skis its easier to grip rails. So do sharp edges help with gripping rails?

i think its over exaggerated how much it matters. I've never detuned my edges but from rails the inside edge of both my skis is now very rounded.

If you ride a lot of plastic tubes and wood rails it's the only way to go. On metal rails a sharp edge will definitely damage easier and will get nicked and burred with time. If you don't dress those out with a file they will lead to edge cracks eventually.

Just take a gummy stune, take the burrs off your new, sharp edges. Go skiing. Detuning is overrated unless you slide on PVC pipes instead of snow.

Riding with sharp edges is overrated. It's not like you have to round each ski tip to tail. If you aren't racing on your park skis or something there I don't see a reason to need sharp full length edges. It takes 5 min to detune your edges nicely and if it saves you from snagging and eating shit one time it's worth it.

I detune mine a bit, but I don't go crazy with it. On the one pair of skis I didn't detune I dented my edge like 3rd run on them doing a dfd. Just cautiously slide kinkless rails the first few runs and that would work too.

Just de-tune under foot if you're sliding rails, etc. There's plenty of "sharp" edge left to cruise around and get a good enough turn initiation.

I mean it's not like you absolutely can't do rails without detuned edges... when I first started I didn't even know about detuning my edges and I was fine, never sharpened them either. But you definitely should do it if you're gonna ski park. Helps to keep you from eating shit especially if you're doing stuff like Prospector at Mt. Snow, mad wood rail jibs.

Detuning rails does help to stop catches but it's not the main reason it's done. A sharp edge is much more likly to catch and pull out. So to try and minimise damage a detune can really help. Take slope athletes for example. Before a comp they will get a full base grind an a complete edge sharpen but then we still detune underfoot as even pros don't want to trash skis as they are still limited, especially if they ride for a big brand and they are getting hand made skis to there requirements.

this

I think it depends on the ski as well. I had the old salomon dumonts and didn't file down the edge and they had cracks on their first day which eventually led the whole edge falling out. Afterwards I got lines. I never filed down the edges and they are still fine

detuning your edge underfoot will greatly increase the longevity of the edge throughout the season from rail use. Leaving it sharp puts extra friction wear & tear on the edges leaving them more susceptible to cracking, pulling out, etc. If you hit a ton of rails, detune your edge underfoot. If you are a pipe skiing nut, don't.

Dont do it. I dare you...

Why risk the chance of taking an unexpected fall? I think the digging an edge into a rail and eating shit unexpectedly is the worst kinda fall. You dont see it coming, and in between your body and the snow is a big metal object.

anybody else keep 2 pairs of park skis on deck? having full sharp edges for jumps and outside the park is the way to go, imo.

This belongs in the tuning/building forum, but the term detune gets way overused, a detune is a really minor rub down to take the burrs and a little bit of the edge off, after a detune your edges should still be pretty sharp

I've been holding back comments on this thread, but I can't anymore.

If you have new skis, they will de-tune themselves over time. Before this post I've always wanted to come in here skiierman style all bitching and flaming about people who just plain s uck, but that nasty picture and someone pointing out that not detuning edges may also pull the edge out of the ski kept me from commenting because I thought they were semi-valid points.

..but fuck that. If you go to the shop and ask to have your edges detuned, they should give you a weird look. I've never detuned my edges on any of my 4 pairs of skis since I started skiing park, and I fucking suck. I still have all my edges for the most part, and I may catch an edge from time to time but it's just a reminder that YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

Detuning edges is just a bandaid fix for poor form. If you're catching your edges on rails, it's your form not the edges. Plain and simple. Learn it. STOP THE BONER SLIDES

You are fuckin retarded. Yes, they will detune over time. That said, nobody wants to wait for their edges to naturally detune over time and eat shit because of hooking on rails in the mean time. It speeds up the process so that you can avoid that whole situation. Plus retuning also decreases the change of edge cracks because there is less friction between the edge and rail, effectively making the ski last longer if you are skiing a ton of rails.

Also you even admit you suck at park, so maybe it's possible that you aren't up to a level where you notice differences in how skis handle rails, where more seasoned park skiers can tell the difference? Nobody wants to eat shit because and edge hooks, and when you are doing rail tricks, the chance of hooking gets a lot higher than basic slides

You guys are totally getting it wrong what I meant is do you think having sharp edges helps grip a rail. I have never detuned my edges bc my edges are gone in,a month anyway
