Not another canon lens thread...help

so i'm looking to get a new lens for my 20D. my old lens died tragically due to a tripod fail and i've been stuck with my normal lens ever since.

i'm thinking about the following lenses:

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (first choice, but a little pricier)

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ($100 cheaper, 1/2 stop)

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (because its cheap)

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II

Basically I can't decide if i want to go big and get a nicer lens with IS and USM, or just play it safe and get a cheapo lens and sacrifice image quality.

Also if anyone has used the first two lenses I'd especially like to hear what you think about them.

nikon.nikon.nikon. haha get a lens then we can shoot together in the fall!!!!!! AHHHHH when we move in2 our house and in boulder and in summit

from what ive heard the first choice is your best choice, i have the 28-135 and its a dope lens does a really good job, and i got a great price on it, but the first one is supposably better, i wouldnt get a kit lens personally, 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 is always a favorite of any photographer

not my best pic, and not the best quality version of it, yet this was with the 28-135, on my 40D IN ZION

the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is an incredible lens, i love it, it's so good for everything, an awesome walkaround lensi wouldn't recommend any of the others over the tamron, it's the best quality. IS doesn't mean that much also, either use a tripod or crank up your iso

or the 17-85, i use to have it and I loved it. DO NOT get the 28-135, you will lose all of your wide angle.

yeah, i don't really like to crank up my ISO so that's good to know...i'm just thinking about price differences here and how i want the wide angle factor for shooting park jumps and stuff...any arguments for the first canon?

well then you want lower aperture, definitely do 17-50 or 17-85, i'd recommend 17-50 because of the lower constant aperture and it's just an awesome lens. i didn't like the 17-85 as much

Yes yes yes. I have it paired with my 20D and I love it. Can't beat it for the price. Check my blog/website for samples if you want.
