North Lake vs. South Lake

So it's pretty much September and I'm trying to decide the spot for the coming winter (and hopefully more thereafter). Basically, it's come down to living in Squaw city and skiing Squaw and Alpine or going South Lake and getting the Tahoe local pass. I've been to both on ski trips and to party but that said, I know a few powder days and nights here and there can be a lot different from getting a locals perspective.

So with that in mind, I'm hoping to throw it out to NS Tahoe locals and better understand the good and not-so-good points of both spots - during both winter and summer. How do they compare to each other from a locals view and how do they compare to other spots you've lived in or spent a good deal of time at - Mammoth, Breck, Vail, Telluride, Whistler, Jackson, Wanaka, Queenstown, etc, etc. More or less, what type of person would you put in North vs. South?

Any feedback is much appreciated and of course, +k for your help

I don't really know much about the social scene that well. My parents had a place in Truckee I used to stay at. North Lake wins my vote simply because of Squaw. Skiing Squaw is so worth it, I'd put it over anything South Lake has to offer. You're also closer to Incline and Reno if you wanted to test those waters.

There's a lot more shit happening in South Lake... Unless you're die hard and don't care about anything else, North Lake is your best bet. But if you're trying to have a good time and party and stuff, South Lake definitely has a bigger scene and there's a lot more tourists and stuff, so things are usually more clean and maintained...

south lake is also may better in the summer and its hard to beat with the Tahoe local pass. Its also way cheaper to live in south lake.

South lake is where the tourists go, its got a fun nightlife and more people to meet.

the West Shore (TC, Tahoma, Homewood, ect.) is the place for skiing. they also get the most snow, due too storms coming from the west and dumping all the snow on the west side of the lake.

North Shore Lake Tahoe is where the nice beaches are at, which makes it a good spot in the summer.

you cant really go wrong by choosing to live in the Tahoe region, but i'd say the west shore is your best bet.

thats where i am

Hey guys - appreciate the feedback for sure. I'm actually headin to Tahoe in about an hour - gonna be in South Lake tonight and North Lake tomorrow. Staying with some friends at night but is anyone off today to cruise around and check out the place so I can see where things are at? All my friends are working or still in NZ. We'll also be at the Jeremy Jones premiere in Squaw tomorrow night if anyone is down for that.

Hit me up on my cell if anyone is around to show me around and we can grab some beers later on -

ill be there...along with most of tahoe. should be a good night.

i live in squaw as well so if you're back in the valley hit me up

This question's been beat to death...

Northlake has the better skiing, Squaw, Alpine, Northstar's park, nightpark at Boreal, Sugarbowl is super underrated, Homewood is incredible for finding untouched.. Lots of dope backcountry,Truckee and TC/Kingsbeach are dope little towns, but not a whole lot of nightlife outside of a trip to Reno/SLT

South Tahoe has way more nightlife, cheaper housing, lots more jobs (and people in general), Heavenly is RIGHTTHERE in town, Sierra is a great place to escape the n00bs, and Kirkwood is right up there with Squaw and Alpine, terrainwise. Having them all on the same pass is pretty solid.

But ultimately, I'd still take a cabin in northlake if I had to decide between the two...

Looking for jobs in the Tahoe region. I'm graduating in the spring and looking to try somewhere new. All my friends want to move to the Big Bear region but the job search isn't looking too promising down there, plus Lake Tahoe looks beautiful.
