i was wondering if any of you have north face jackets and how they work. i was looking at the 'mithril acclimate'
http://rsn.altrec.com/shop/detail/13696/9/write

anyway, it was on sale at a store near me for 180, in all black, it was nice, but ive never had a northface jacket before, and was wondering if that was worth it. retail is supposedly like 390

dont buy anythign North Face unless it is made out of GoreTex XCR- all that other shit that they ahve come up with, such as 'HyVent' is fucking worthless if you ever get into less than ideal conditions. if you work at a shop, try and get proform on some of the higher end north face stuff, all the rest of their line has gone to shit.

I'm getting a lower end model for really cheap because TNF and a local shop are sponsoring my college snowsports club next year. It's made of their 'HyVent' material, which I heard was pretty shitty too, but it's a nice looking jacket for really cheap that will have our club logos/sponsors on it. I'll post back next winter with a report (not that it'll be any use to you specifically by then).

i have a goretex northface that is pretty sick, its more of a casual winter jacket then a ski jacket though.

i bought a oakley jacket for skiing and it is sooooo dutty

The North Face's down jackets (Nuptse) aren't waterproof, if that's the one you're talking about.

I have the XCR summit series and it is pretty tight. If you could get it for around $200 go for it. Otherwise I will sell you mine so I can get a hotplate :D

'Yeah, I'll get that cleaned up lickity-split. Speaking of lickity-split what do you say you and I meet up later, see what's going on? Just kidding. But seriously, I'm new in town, kinda lonely, looking for my parents..

I have some sweet north face pants. so warm, water proof, comfortable. good pants.

I haven't changed my signature in quite some time, so I will change it. Here it is.

I have the Nuptse jacket, and it is not a good jacket to ski in, thats for sure...but it is nice to have for cold weather and just wearing around town for sure...and yes, the Summit Series is pretty good shit, go for that if you have teh cash

i've got the Nuptese jacket it rocks - i was under the impression that it wasn't designed for skiing.

Ds91260: i already got my osama pros, i stole them from a cave in afganistan

ArmadaFreerider8: Why would tanner hall leave armada after he just helped start it

i got the North Face mountain light parka (goretex) with a North Face Khumbu fleece liner. i only needed the liner once or twice this past season, cuz just the shell was warm enough

If you want a softgood to be waterproof it's got to be a gore-tex or sympatex product. The other waterproofing is just coated on the exterior of the garments. Gore-tex is glued inside the nylon you see, this allows it to see less abraison and thus does not wear off. Their nupse down jackets are not waterproof and do not claim to be. If you need a waterproof down jacket thier summit jacket is waterproof.

I have TNF clothing and stand by it, it is super strong, the GTX stuff is super waterproof, and they have a lifetime warranty so they will stand behind the performance forever. TNF Rules.

hmmm i personaly dont like northface because its sorta prepy but i must say there higher end gear is pretty damn good.....but ya i would stick to oakley or bonfire there shit is hella waterproof....

i have an xlr8r and it's hyvent and it has never let water through. But the seams on the pocket zippers have ripped and that sucks, there turn around time for replacement is like 4-6 weeks. Other than that the jacket has been fine.

theres plenty of other brands that'll keep you just as warm if not warmer than north face...arc'teryx, mountain hardwear, they're all good brands...

Gore-Tex is not the amazing thing everyone thinks it is! There are other products out there that work just as well. Check out this article for a pretty objective test of various options. It's all done with raincoats, but the same technology applies to ski gear:

That article didn't really give any good information. Like the guy says, a garbage bag is 100% waterproof, as is a clear PVC parka. Breathability is the main issue, which wasn't properly tested in that aticle.

Good to see that he like the TNF HyVent model though. I checked out the Troop model that I'm getting a good deal on today, and it's a really nice looking jacket, and the lining feels awesome.

agreed, those tests really didnt test each jacket to their full potential. hyvent is not all that breathable eitehr, ive noticed that there is alot of moisture that collects on the inside of the jacket, as opposed to gore tex xcr, which does a great job of breathing

Yeah, that's definently not the most rigorus test, I'll give it that, but it shows that there are other options if you don't want to buy/can't afford the high quality Gore-Tex that Ryan (Salomon2003) mentioned. The other goretex is shit. I have a jacket made by REI that's also a 3 layer system, it rocks. It's not goretex, it's REI's own invention. It's still pretty new, so who knows how it will stack up in the long run, but REI's got a lifetime guarantee, so if it craps out, I can get a new one.
