Individuals will have different takes on these terms. I use BIPOC when I want to talk about Black, Indigenous, and People of Color--it doesn't matter how many of them they are, to get at the decision to use or not use "minority". There is definitely language out there that is more "people first" which is important to be thinking about. I do do a double take, though, when I see people actively pushing back just at the notion of thinking about nomenclature in a way that prioritizes peoples' dignity and actively seeks to avoid language that could be demeaning to some individuals. I say always seek to use the most empowering and inclusive language because why not?
A word of advice for all the people in this thread talking like, "the people I know don't ever say there's anything wrong with XYZ...": there's a very real caution that BIPOC might feel about giving feedback to white people. I'm not saying this is how your friends feel, and I'm not saying they feel it toward you, but they very well might, and that's important to consider. In a society where white people hold power and have a long history of reacting defensively and retaliating against people who critique their discourse, it's sometimes safer to just stay silent while white people act a fool. Again, I would never imply that I know what your friends are thinking or what they would say, but the absence of dissent from BIPOC is not evidence that you're an anti racist.
