No poles= more style?

A few years ago, i feel liek everyone was skiing with no poles.

I thought it was fun... I now ski with poles, but i do find they are sometimes annoying. it was nice to have my hands free. Definitely will be sticking to skiing with poles tho.

My skis have a large surface area with a 171 tip (are 155 long) and pressure is distributed more uniformly across the ski due to stance behind midline and reverse camber. Heartcarving is the shit. I'll make that obvious this Jan.

Henrik should take time out from his demo tour and fly over to Zermatt this Jan and have a ski with me lol. I need some aerial shenanigans in my vid (that I can learn from) and in turn I can impart some wisdom of the heartcarve to him because I can see the young Padwan is ready... that is before he falls to the darkside which could happen.

or you could stop giving a shit about how people ski and stop trying to force "heartcarve" (which sounds gay) onto people

After Henrik.

Its all in perception. I definitely see what people like about no poles, but in my opinion the only person that I've seen pull it off in a way that I enjoy watching is Kieran

poles are for strippers!

it really only matters to you how you want to ride... your body position can change dramatically when you are charging no pole style and it forces to use more of your body to make turns, somewhat like snowboarding. it can also allow that freedom especially with grabs and riding switch. poles, or not, only the flow matters... it does suck in lift lines, however!

when im shredding with henrik and phil, i can see their flow and am stoked they are pushing their own style in the comps. but when i am shredding with candide, he just makes fun of me all the time! haha no matter how many times we have talked about it (he even lent me his poles for a run to see if i could ski with them= crashed 3 times), he has his old school opinion and we accept each others view...

bottom line, who gives a fuck about what others think and ride with your own style

that was sick! i occasionally enjoy skiing park without poles, but i cant imagine skiing agressive powder without them.

i would only ski without poles in park and messing around on groomers and trails but if i ever skied powder (which i can't because icecoast) i'd use poles

Here is the spill about poles....

First of all.. if you cant make a decision for yourself about whether to have poles or not to have poles, you need to create your own style and own it... thats what skiing is all about!

Second of all.. I use poles because they create a since of balance and keep my arms from waving around in the air or on rails like an idiot. The gripping of your hand to the pole helps one focus on his hands and essentially his body.... helping just about anyone clean up their jumps and create more ski style.

I think its a bad generalization to say tht poles will help clean up anyones style. When I use poles I don't think about where my arms are, but when I lose the poles I am much more conciouss of my arms, and as a result, my styles alot tighter and clean.

i might be wrong here but skiing is supposed to be all about having fun..

as for the second point of yours- i think it's just practice in any case..waving your hands around with poles doesn't look too good either. when you learn how to avoid waving you hands around when doing tricks it doesn't matter if you're gripping something or not..

For those of you doubting people saying they can pull of no poles, heres a little edit I'm in. Third day of no poles (although I spent some time on summer setup over summer break going no poles). I think my style is better without poles personally.

BTW Im in the saga On Deck.

I started skiing with no poles the very beginning of last season after getting my thumb caught in my fks (lol) and was unable to hold them. I have found that when i ski the park i feel way more comfortable without poles. lots of people say that the poles help them keep themselves balanced but i find that skiing with poles makes me unbalanced. Its all about how you ski and what makes you comfortable while skiing. everyone is different deal with it. note though that groomers and anything outside the park i ski with poles.

flow is like rubbing two logs from george kokoefer on Vimeo.

Shameless self promotion, if posting shitty old runs of yours is self promotion.... But basically my point is when I ski no poles and I'm very comfortable with a trick my arms stay pretty relaxed and look decent, but when it's a more technical trick i.e. one that takes more spinning aka 1:45 in this edit i always find my arms getting all wacky.

These threads are absolutely retarded. If you like to ski with poles...then do so. If you like to ski without poles...then do so. Its THAT fucking simple kids.

The only time I don't wear poles is when I hit up some urban because they tend to get in the way. I always pack poles for a mountain because I feel awkward without them trying to get through a lift line and doing other things throughout the mountain. Plus if you don't have poles you look like a gaper. do whatever feels more natural for you, not what others are doing.

Completely depends on how well you rock em. When I'm trying a new trick sometimes I throw my poles on the ground just to make it easier, then once I get it once I'll try it with poles. I personally think poles are better in general, but there are some skiers who are so much better without them.

definitely starting to notice this to become more prevalent at the local hill with the e-dollo wannabes who nollie off everything progressively starting to not use poles. Not that I have any problem with it, by all means if you want to ski without poles it is fine with me but I do see the trend starting to set in
