No Poles: An interesting look...

well hey there guys, i feel like joining. sooo, I used to always use poles, although i used short ones in the park, big ones elsewhere.... but then I put a pole handle through my face landing wrong off a jump, scaring me into no poling the park. basically all ive noticed is that having poles puts your weight farther forward in your boot if you use them correctly. yes, they do help you balance as well. when i no pole, my weight is more centered or neutral. i feel that now ive gotten used to it, no poling is way better in the park for means of grabs, hand drags, and setting your spins, not to mention knuckle poundage. on the other hand, it looks cooler when you have poles. so yea. i don't know why we talk about this so much.

fair enough, just saying though haha. heavier pole, more inertia, harder to quickly move/ unbalance yourself.

NO POLES NO GOAL

no, just kidding, a good rider without poles is so much steeezier. though, there are too many bad riders that try to look cool without poles and that is SOooo much ''2007''

Yea, sure, not that i have something about no-poles riders but i do believe that arms + poles provides more balance than just arms.... but that's just my opinion.

i learned without poles, and after that i find them kinda difficult to use, definately for grabs and stuff. They are lifesavers in shit like lift queues though!

i first started no poles because of working park crew

now i dont use them at all, not even in back country

i dont have any problem with people using poles

here are my reasons for not using them:

1.ive landed a spin weird and got a pole in the goggle and another time in the temple and

my buddy fractured his eye socket on a landing because of a pole to the face..

2. so much easier to hike, relax on chairlift, carry tools/gear

3. riding switch feels better with no poles

Bottom line: poles get in the way and i feel a lot freer/safer without them

a lot of people i talk to, wont even try to ski no poles because they think its weird or "gay" because they dont see anyone else do it.. so i dont see how no poles is trendy or a fad like all the different clothing styles that come and go in fs skiing

one way to look at it is that poles are NOT essential to skiing, and are like training wheels

Skis on the other hand are essential to skiing..

comparing no poles skiing to ski blading makes no sense..ski blading is its own sport and has nothing to do with not using poles

flat ground is only a problem if you cant skate well, but if you can you dont NEED poles

i've skied with poles for 14 years and without poles for only one season and i know for sure that i like no poles BETTER... if you've never skied without poles for an extended period of time then stfu and go try it for a while before you talk shit

so ski however you want, poles or no poles but stop hating on no poles because no poles=steezy and sick

I just think no poles is really fun.

But for now I think Ill probably sitll use poles out of the park, like in gnarly powder, but who know?!

hahaha, i totally know what you mean, everyday kids would say stuff in philosophy 101 and everytime i'd think " jesus christ you did not just seriously say that"

Sure, bud.

Skiing with your boots totally unbuckled is also more difficult (hey it can help you improve your balance too, just like no poles).

So I guess skiing with your boots undone should be the next big thing that "deserves more respect".

well ive never looked at it that way i dont hav to much of a problem wen i ski w/o poles because i never really use them wen i have them because pole planting is ugly and i have super balance cuz i ride uncycles in the summer haha

i couldnt imagine skiing the steeps, deeps, or crud without poles. the balance they offer, or at least the comfort is something i think makes people look smoother in their skiing. Plus, people skiing out of the park without poles look extremely gay. They look lost, like total beaters.

I do both because I have to steal poles from my rental shop to have any, so often I dont.

I feel that no poles makes jumps and grabs easier, and poles make rails and jibs easier. Both are steezy, but whatever it makes easier is obviously gonna look better with that. I think nopoles is super steeze on jumps, but not so much on rails. And I think poles look akward on jumps, but natural on rails.

i might have to cause of a hand injury, but i have a love/hate relatoinship with my poles they help me with spins but it is fun no poles switch.

Although I agree that skiing in general without poles is harder, I'm going to make the argument that park skiing is actually easier without poles.

1. I don't think the balancing effects of the poles really help you when your skiing in a straight line in to and out of park features. Also most park rails are wide and rarely single barrel, so if anything I would say poles almost get in the way while your riding park rather then help your balance (I often hit jibs with a camera in my hand when we are filming and I have no problems sliding anything in a park).

2. It's waaaaay easier to grab your skis no poles (which is why I personally think lots of people say its better, could be wrong though).

3. You can spin faster with out poles. You don't have to set your spins as hard because you need less energy to do the same amount of spinning as you no longer have your poles slowing you down. Though there is a balance loss, your skis being much heavier do a fine job of stabalizing your body in the air.

4. I find it easier to lean new tricks with out poles as I don't have to worry about them jabbing me in the face or getting in my way, and it gives you more of a trampoline feel.

Now I used to be a no pole hater, but that was because there are alot of trend hoars who did it and still do it only because they think its cool, (they're the kids who always whine "why do you gotta make fun of me for no poles" becuase if they truely enjoyed doing it they wouldn't care who makes fun of them just like I don't care when boarders try and burn me for skiing), I have since met some really good riders who actually like to rock no poles because they like it better. I just personally prefer the look of poles because it balances out the look of the lenght of ski, and it gives your hands something to do instead of that little t-rex arm steeze lots of no polers got going on.

i find jumps to be extremely difficult with my poles but rails easier to slide and easier to switchup and spin on and off of.

to start off im just gonna say that i am indifferent about this... i have nopoled for long periods of times and in many different situations... for the past 2-3 months ive picked up my poles again and ive realized a few things...

1. saying that most park rails are wide is kinda silly... im pretty sure thats gonna be subjective to where you ski (or what parks you ski in at your mountain)... and i think that on rails, poles give you a little bit more to work with (for swups and spinning on and off... that little extra swing weight def helps you get around)... now i do agree that they get in the way some times, esp. while falling...

2. your def right that grabbing is easier w/o poles... but i think that it looks way steezier if you can pull off tech grabs with your poles in your hands (after picking my poles back up i can only do like 3 fuckin grabs, while w/o i was doing all sort of grabs...

3.this is the one i think you really failed... poles slowing you down??? for real??? thats just silly... if anything sking with poles helps you set your spin so much easier... again the extra added swing weight, not to mention how much easier it is to keep your hands calm, cool and collected in the air...

4. i agree that it does make it easier to learn things for you dont have to worry about falling on them so much... but i found this year that after learning a lot of new stuff in the park that once you pick up those polls again, your jut a much better all around skier... i dont worry about jabbing myself anymore cause i fall a lot less in the park and ive found that in the end, it really does help fine tune your skiing...

in the end, i love skiing... and thats what anyone should ever care about.... we are all skiing, and thats the important part... not weather were using poles or not..

I feel better on jumps and just bombing down groomers without poles but I feel more balanced with them on rails and in pow
