hey NS getting ready to maybe buy a d7000 since photography is my main interest, anyway...

85% Photo

15% Video

is it decent enough so I can make a few nice edits?

Yes, the d7000 is the best nikon HDDSLR. The 3100 and 5100 have video modes but you can't even set manual exposure during live view. Plus, the d7000 is a superior photo camera to both the 3100 and 5100 and only like 400 bucks more than the 5100.

alright thanks

also plans for lenses?

nikon 50mm f/1.4d

and need something standard maybe telephoto?

suggestions?

these are a list of lenses i recommend, you don't NEED every single one but they're all good:

tokina 11-16

tamron 17-50

nikon 80-200 2.8ED

nikon 50mm 1.4d

nikon 35mm f2d

nikon 85mm 1.8

all good lenses, id suggest the 80-200 over the 70-200s cause they're 1/2 the price and you will get a very similar image. If you don't care much about auto focus, pretty much ANY old vintage nikon lens will shine too.

Yeah it's pretty decent for video. For an all around lens you should check out the 16-85, it's super sharp and covers a really good range. The 50 1.4 is obviously really good too. Look into an 80-200 f/2.8D because they're cheap as hell and will still auto focus on the D7000.

Also at eheath you can't set aperture in live view on D7000, you need to switch out of it first unless you have an aperture ring and you set the camera up to adjust aperture by the ring.

hold up.

i have 4 (nikon) lenses

80-200 2.8

20 2.8

50 1.8

16-85 3.5-5.6

get the 16-85 first. its unreal! its so sharp and with the D7000 why would you spend money for a 2.8 when you have an ISO like that?! get the 50 as well if you like artsy low DOF shit. the autofocus in the video will help that 1.4 more then you can ever imagine.

sources: work at camera store. own D300/D7000. Photography student.

PM me if you have any more photography questions.

i would not buy from you if you told me the video auto focus will help. The af during video is poop.

nothing against you though it sounds like your more into photo, just stop telling clients the auto focus is worth anyhthing more than garbage

sorry to jack this thread with a simple question regarding D7000 video mode, but there's no need to create a new one:

how much of a limitation is the lack of 60p, is it possible to have some decent little slow motions anyway?

thanks

You can do slow motion down to 80% speed before it gets choppy. For some people who love slow motion, it would be a deal breaker. On the other hand, if you don't want to make things insanely slow then it's not that bad.

Personally I don't find it too hard to work around, but it definitely would be nice to have.

There's no reason to purchase the 1.4. It's like 200 + more than the 1.8 and it has nearly identical performance. I own the 50 and love it, have never once felt the need for a 1.4
