I have a Nikon D3100 and I was gonna use the 1080p at 24fps. Do you think that is enough FPS? Or should I just use 720p at 30 FPS.

++k for some legit help

i have a d3100 and use it on 30 as well but I was wondering what settings you guys use for a follow cam situation

I used to have a D3100, now I have a D7000 but basically the same quality and frame rates for videos and such. I think it depends on what you're shooting kind of? Am I wrong?

If you're going to be shooting skiing then I would definitely shoot 720p at 30fps. For like... short movies and studio work, I think I would shoot 1080p at 24.

I don't shoot video that much, so I'm not the most educated on this, so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just always thought in anything faster paced you would need that higher framerate, but you would want quality shooting slower paced, less movement shots. Like I said I may be wrong though.

i have the same camera 720 on 30fps just because you gget close to the same quality with great frames but your computer processes it better

You're pretty much correct, but really it's all personal preference.

Typically sports will be shot using 60fps because then when you edit in post you can get smooth slow-mo because there are more frames to utilize when creating a slow-motion effect, or "conforming" footage.

60fps and 30fps also give a slightly more digit look as opposed to 24fps which is more cinematic. Of course shutter speed also plays into the digital look, but that doesn't apply to the D3100 because shutter speed is automatic.

Now of course you may want to shoot skiing in 24fps, there's nothing wrong with that, it's just a different style I suppose. It will give you a different look, and paired with a vintage prime or something, you could get a really different and creative looking shot.
