Nike 6.0 in skiing?

You have to realize without Nike being there there wouldn't be any jobs at all and those people would be screwed. They may not be doing as well as people are in developed countries but they are stimulating economic growth. I'm also pretty sure that movie was made in like 2000 because Nike has been working on their Corporate Social Responsibility since then. It looked really bad for them and people were actually boycotting Nike's products, thats the way it works now in business since we have so much media, people keep tabs on large global presences. It would be a poor business move for them to have people thinking they're an evil company. If you look on their site they have Nikebiz, their Corporate social responsibility website that clearly states how they run their business. Now obviously they're not paying the same wages as people in North America but it is ludicrous to expect such, what they're doing is providing an opportunity and allowing for better working conditions. You have to realize Nike goes to factories and gets them to make their shoes, they don't build a factory and employ a bunch of people and start beating them. They get a company to produce shoes and they generally arrange for an increase in the standards for the people working there.

I'm willing to believe Nike is trying to increase their social responsibility; it's a good marketing move. I'd like to see third-party evidence though.

http://www.mallenbaker.net/csr/CSRfiles/nike.html

"The Global Alliance was quite complimentary. It said "Upon due

consideration, members of the Operating Council unanimously expressed

their judgement that upon learning of the alleged violations surfaced

through the Global Alliance assessment process, that Nike had acted in

good faith, and developed a serious and reasonable remediation plan.""

"Labor activist Jeff Ballinger dismisses Nike's corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns as cost-effective public relations. He told the Corporate Crime Reporter:

"The CSR cost for Nike is about $10 million to $12 million a year, just

for the CSR staff and expenses, to go to these sustainability meetings

all over the world. ... They have two or three Nike people at every

meeting. That’s part of the CSR game. ... I figure 75 cents per pair of

shoes to the worker would fix the problem. If Nike instead paid workers

75 cents more per pair of shoes, do you know what that would cost Nike

compared to the CSR cost? That would cost them $210 million a year."

Something people need to read up on but Nike really has been getting their act together or at least trying.

yeah dude, if you cant handle the fact that there are very real problems out there, just act hard and accuse anyone who cares of trying to fit a certain image. we're all SO impressed that youre so tough that you dont care about people in other countries getting fucked. you must be so cool.

too bad you couldnt fit in a name drop or some hint that you know some amateur skier, then this would be a 100% textbook skiierman post

whatever, i guess we should just let you get your kicks in online, i cant imagine there's a whole lot of good stuff going on in your real life

i dont understand, why'd you say that then post that paragraph that didnt support what you said at all?? nike makes around a billion per year on shoes (profit, NOT revenue), that PR bullshit you just showed there is not impressive.

I just kinda feel like thats a poor outlook, like saying, well their living conditions are poor, 'but hey they at least they have a job!'

I feel like this debate has gone far from skiing I guess I set it up like it would, and I just really wanted to point out another side it all, something that I don't think we often acknowledge in the ski industry. I was just interested in hearing everyone's perspective.

I realize there is really only so much we can do. And this is one of the downsides of capitalism. But like many have said before, we should just take the responsibility to know the products we're buying.

do you really think so? do you really want more retards that ski to be cool taking up space on mountains that are already crowded? do we even want skiing to become a mainsteam sport? i sure as fuck don't.

For some reason when im looking to buy ski stuff i always looked to a ski based brand, not a brand that cam to skiing later.

That was a terrible documentary, with a lot of misinformation. They never mentioned that nike doesn't own a single factory, nor did they mention that nike doesn't employ a single factory worker. The guy and his hippy girlfriend are basically really fucking stupid and naive.
Capitalism is to blame for the inequality of wealth, not nike...We are all guilty of supporting capitalism...bring on 2012

yeah, go socialism! then we can all really understand what living conditions are like in a third world country when nobody has any incentive to perform better. why am i going to college and trying to learn how to contribute to society. fuck it, i'll have somebody else do it for me!

communism, socialism, same thing. both level the playing field, decrease competition, and provide no incentive to progress. we might as well live in wigwams.

lets stay on topic,
we shouldnt single out Nike. All apparel brand outsource production, including Saga and Frist Drop.
All companies are out to make a profit.
That documentary was shit.

That's funny you would bring up Sweden in a thread concerning human rights. Sweden doesn't have wigwams because if you live in a wigwam they will probably deem you mentally insane, lock you up, and lobotomize you. I do suppose that is a way of providing incentives.
Since everyone has been so apt to provide sources here is a good article explaining some of the fallacies of Sweden's "socialism" and their human rights violations...http://www.lewrockwell.com/dieteman/dieteman33.html

Yes, I have lost focus. Nike is just doing what you, the consumer, wants them to do. You should blame yourself for wearing Nike just as much as you should blame the management of Nike. That, I think, was the original point of this thread.

ppl are still gonna buy nike for as long as it exist beacause the brand name is worth so much. Not everyone knows what jibberish and orage and armada is even though it costs more than nike.

haha i was just thinking about this in my english class today because we were talking about propeganda and what the nike swoosh represents. i thought what if nike made skis? i bet they'd suck

you're just another kid lying to themselves to try to make yourself seem like a better person. if nike offered you 50k a year contract on top of that, bonuses for winning comps, you'd take that in a heartbeat. the same goes for all the other little fuckers in this thread who seem to care sooo much about all the poor sweatshop workers in bumfuck asia. hell i bet half of you already own nike shit. i'm at least telling the truth and telling you how it really is, while all you insane kids are doing are telling others what they like to hear. which do you think is more sad? someone who admits they don't care and would support a company with questionable practices because one person really DOESN'T make a difference, or a kid who pretends to care but in reality does nothing and already supports the company or would under the right circumstances? but hey man at least at the end of the day you made up a fake reason to feel better about yourself and have more karma points, right? its honestly worse than the girls who support breast cancer only by changing their facebook status. its pathetic.

seriously dude stop trying that hard.

no one here is accusing people who buy nike shit, or saying that nike athlete did a wrong thing.

we re just wondering if it s better to support other companies who have been in the sport for longer and dont have those kind of ethic problems.

but please stop being rude like that it s really sad.

haha i mustve hit a nerve. also, read the OP and realize half the stupid shit you just spouted is addressed in the first post of this thread. then realize that shying away from the conspicuous fucked up stuff going on doesnt make you tougher or "more real" than someone who at least tries to make SOME difference in things they see a problem with. the first thing the OP said was that he is not making this thread to try to get people to not use nike at all. try to withhold that mercurial temper for 5 seconds and actually read

after that, remind yourself to stop trying so hard. or dont, i get a kick out of pussy red haired kids overcompensating in real life and it's still sort of funny on the internet

Seriously man, no else here has been disrespectful about this. I have Nike stuff, I'll probably still wear it as there is no point in wasting clothes. I don't think I'll buy anymore more but like no one is lying about anything. Its just another perspective I thought of it and was interested in seeing if anyone had put thought into Nike and the ski industry. They're a shoe company, not a skiing company I simply don't see why people have jumped on it so quickly. I really don't see why you're getting mad at people for having some conscern about it. I just love how you're like more money in skiing= better for the sport. I'd rather have a tight knit community with class than an over exposed sport any day.

Do I feel better about myself? No. I don't expect to make any real impact. But change does happen when people talk about stuff, we're a community of skiers and talking about this stuff and seeing others peoples view makes me a 'little fucker' then so be it? I'm simply acknowledging a flaw in society. I wanted to see what other skiers would say when I brought up the issue. So thanks man, you really shed some light.

I really don't see whats wrong with expressing some interest and sympathy in this topic? If you don't care, then don't make such a big deal out of it. I was hoping to get mature responses, it was for the sake of discussion not to change anyone's opinion.

yeah man... talking built the golden gate bridge, talking about breast cancer cured it.... seriously? action gets things done. what skiierman is saying is that youre making yourself feel better by saying things, but youre still wearing their stuff... youre not actually doing anything. you know what you can do? how about you dont buy anything made in china. boycott it. talk to you state representative, call your congress man, DO something, dont just talk about it. if it really bothered you, and you really cared about this, you would DO something... which you arnt, and you wont. people like you are pathetic.

exactly, which makes this whole discussion as dumb as asking is it bad to have (insert big sponsor here) in skiing because it doesn't matter to anyone in our sport.

you have your ideas, but the fact that you throw them in people s face and that you are so rude all the time is really sad, and to be honnest i m really happy i dont think like you you are a sad person.

people are allowed to think and talk about stuff.

if we feel concerned why shouldnt we talk about it ? and if we stop buying their product that makes a difference.

i m really sorry for you dude.

you remind me of those conservative religious people who throw their ideas at people s face and never even consider thinking about stuff if it doesnt go their way.

but you must think a lot in your life i bet. too bad, you should it would make you a better person.

haha ok. I'm pathetic. I'm sorry about talking about something and not lobbying it. I'm sorry for having an opinion and asking for others. I'm sorry for expecting some maturity. I'm sorry that my pathetic lungs are breathing your self-righteous air.

I do plan on researching this more, and making a choice from there. Talking is a way of educating yourself, and learning something about the topic. I'm pretty sure people talked and educated themselves before they build the golden gate bridge, and they will do the same for cancer. I was asking your guys opinion and trying to learn something about it then act. I didn't realize awareness was such a pathetic thing?

I stated at the start of the thread it was not my point in thread not to change anyone's opinion. I haven't determined mine. Just question something. It pisses me off when people have an automatic opinion without listening to others or giving it some logical thought. Why would I waste my MP's time after watching a 20minute video? Throw all the petty insults you want, it shows how much logic you have.

hahaha throw my ideas in people's faces? look at how many of you lying little bleeding heart pussies jumped at me when i said my idea... or it was the part about calling you all retards which would make you pussies.

I gotta admit, I love my 6.0's, but it is kinda sad to see a company that seems like its trying to monopolize the industry from shoes to shirts to jeans (yeah, i didn't know they made jeans either.)

I've also heard the artist who made the nike swoosh logo was paid $35. But this was just a rumor, and I have no proof. so /claim.

i didnt see any ideas in what you posted;

and why are you always so rude ?

did your mom forget to pack your lunch today ?

i really feel sorry for you, because you clearly enjoy just insulting people on the internet.

i m really curious what do you do for a living ?

lying? who lied?

and i'd love to see you act so tough if you saw even for a few minutes what goes on every day. you think it's cool to not give a fuck cause your mind is still stuck in high school, but in reality not caring is the pussiest thing you can do, not to mention easy as fuck given that you live in the united states.

who wouldnt jump at you when you spout 100% bullshit? you and oakley kid's argument depends on the idea that you can only either be completely independent and detached from all capitalism, or youre not allowed to say anything negative about it whatsoever. you somehow twist logic around in your head until you can think of some assbackwards way to accuse people who talk about these things of being the "pathetic" ones.

by the way you forgot your gratuitous name drop in your last two posts.. youre slipping

how shocking, another non-response. you'd think that after 25000 posts you'd be able to at least string together a cohesive argument but instead you just dont reply whenever your horseshit posts are replied to. keep up the good work retard youre really defending your position on the matter well

bro, the "i'm above this/i'm not mad" act doesnt really work so well when youve already gotten angered into a 15-20 line temper tantrum from just one short post of mine calling your shit out. or when you have 25000 posts

Well it does reflect on the fact your a bitch and probably got a lot of shit when you were younger so now you feel the need to act tough

Yeah max hill has influenced my skiing for the last couple years along with the whole theory 3 crew. If your not influenced by anyone then obviously you would have your own way of doing something. Being original is pretty much impossible. You go back to your little 4bi9 crew and hide with them trying to be legit.

you can argue the fact about Nike and how much they pay their employees in third world countries but before you go on a rant about Nike, look at everything you wear. just check the tags and see where they're made, Canada? no, USA? nope, Europe? probably not. almost all garments are made in third world countries, this includes the "oh so core" companies everyone follows, there just hasn't been an expose on skiwear companies because it's not "sexy" enough for the media

btw, don't bother arguing with skiierman

I agree, I did that yesterday almost everything I own is from China. Something I never really considered before.

That being said, Nike has been scrutinized more than any other company and being potentially one of the biggest clothing companies in the world I think people have higher expectations for them to set an example for better conditions. They have been under a microscope and still haven't changed much.

I think it would be really sweet if the freeskiing community as a whole kinda denied Nike, but only if it was obvious that the reason was because of sweatshop labor and business morals. You can't play the "they aren't core" angle because that is kind of stupid.
But realistically nothing will happen anyway. And besides I really like my dunks. I used to try not buying stuff from companies that didn't practice positive business morals, then I realized that it is basically impossible and very expensive. Coke owns everything man.
