Newschoolers needs a comeback

I've heard that newschoolers prime was in 2009-2012 which was before I was a member. It would be rad to see more people on newschoolers and get the pros back on.

The simple truth is people are gravitating towards more instantly gratifying platforms like Instagram. There are kids who are under the impression Newschoolers is only a freeskiing Instagram page with no associated website. With fewer people on NS and more on their phone's social media, it's less conducive to the connection of the skiing community and the production of worthwhile content. However, you can't change human habit, so Newschoolers and similar web platforms can find new ways to adapt to consumption behaviors, it will likely not return to the popularity it once had.

Then be the comeback you want to see here.

Seriously, NS dies a little every summer, and then kicks back to life as people put time and energy and their stoke for skiing back into good topics, funny threads, and quality media. Amp that up, share things you like, and contribute for the good of the community, and you'll be surprised what comes of it.

that's not the issue at all. The forums have the same amount of people with or without the upvotes

no, only people like you care about upvotes.

it was a joke kinda like ns but its chill take it serious if you want . ns is always dead in the summer .

Shut up. Maybe if u contributed to threads instead of making a thread that has been made countless times this summer then you would actually be doing something to help

I dont see the problem with having upvotes but I see the problem with down votes.

Upvotes makes some people post only to see others upvote them. That's more of an echo chamber than a discussion imo

That may be true but the upvote and downvotes added some comedy and made the website seem more fun.l when I joined. It also helps separate to good answers from the answers that don't mean anything. Maybe a compromise is a like button or something. I know a few forums for different topics that have that.

Has anyone noticed that ns has gotten more active in these past days? I mean when i check the ns i see New posts in threads lot more than what it was like a week or two ago.

kids are starting to be back in class procrastinating on NS instead of listening to lectures and doing assignments.

I don't. It's the end of summer. Most people are back at college or high school or at least about to be. This is when it usually starts getting more active after the summer months. More or less coincidence if you ask me.

Votes aren't going to have this huge impact on anything like everyone seems to think. If someone seriously stopped using Ns because of votes, or started because they were/weren't there, that's seriously crazy. They're a pretty meaningless feature and adding/removing them does absolutely nothing compared to what other features could do.

You'd have to make some seriously big changes in the way forums are used as a whole if you really want to see this big change.

Just take NS for what it is. Everyone's always complaining about Ns dying or some shit. Fucking let it. Let the people who have better shit to do go. Let the skiers who are really into this shit be into it. Quality over Quantity. NS doesn't need 1 million active members to be sick.

It's obnoxious seeing all the old members complain about what NS used to be. which also amazes me because if anyone has influence to make Ns what it was, it's them.

K I'm done ranting.

i wonder how many downvotes this would have gotten if it was still the old system

Probably like 7 or 8 honestly. It wasn't total bullshit, but it was me who said it and it was quite obnoxious and people definitely disagree with what I said. So it falls into that 7-10 range for sure.

I bet a lot of people stopped going on ns because there was a huge influx of members that would post the DUMBEST shit just to get upvotes and that drove people, long lasting ns members to stop coming on bc they were sick of seeing that kind of shit every single day. And upvotes/downvotes killed discussion in the forums because instead of telling somebody that what they said was dumb you could just click a little down arrow instead. I dont get how people dont understand that a voting system has no place in a forum. It's pointless.

Can't support a company with ad revenue if nobody is seeing the ads. As cool as having a "core" community only might be, serious loss of traffic is bad news for the livelihood of a website like NS.

Fair point. I'd imagine the traffic/potential traffic from news/photos/videos is much more significant than forums though. I've also have been under the impression that NS has been trying to expand on those areas for that reason. It would be kind of interesting to see the break down of where the most time is spent on this site.

Also, to Chubz. I feel like anyone can do that whether there's votes or no votes. It's just posting to get a reaction. People can still do that but they'll get a reply instead of a vote which will also further encourage them to do so. It's like low key trolling in a way, at least that's how I see it. We'll see though. I personally don't think it's gonna do much but only time will tell haha.

Yeah but a lot of kids on NS these days don't have the attention span to read the replies -they'd rather pay attention to what has the most down/up votes. They including me.

Naw dude, we're fine. The forums are only one part. Views in the forums are also actually very hard to monetize, because users don't really click on ads there. Its the content pages which are the most value, and those have skyrocketed as the forums have declined.

Mingg is actually really right. Fuck it. You don't like NS, so be it. Tighter community of core skiers who are super into this will be far better for both NS as a business and the community as a whole.

+1 This!

NS doesn't need a comeback, what we need is people to stop saying NS is dying in the forums and start exploring the other content that's available(if they haven't already). I don't think anything will change about that though. People will always find something to complain about.

Ya getting the app more like the website would make it better but I think that will come eventually. The app did just come out a few months ago.

^i think ns is gonna need an official app to really capture the people who only think ns is an Instagram/facebook page

I think most of the people you are talking about are looking for more of an instagram page. that would be sick but it might undermine the website.

Ya I know. I'm talking about an app that resembles more to Instagram. If more new kids are going to the app instead of website, less people will be here

Fully agree.

Many people who think NS is dead forget the main part of NS users (f.e. me) who do not post a lot. Just reading the topics, watching videos and especially browsing through the news. I made an account just 2 years ago, cause I didnt know for yeaaars that NS has a forum too. Second point why I m not posting a lot is that my main language isnt English and I cant write proper content and getting shit replies that my grammar or whatever sucks isnt helpful either.

*crawling back into his secret cave*

peace out. Winter is coming soon, more videos, news about gear n stuff will come and the activity of NS will rise like always.

I believe I left right around 2011/2012. But of course here I am, back again. I must say, last time I was on this site, it was almost to many members. So many stupid post about nonsense. I/m with Bishop on this one, smaller community = tighter community. I do believe I may like it more these days! Keep killing it everyone!

The man in charge of NS thinks like this, and people wonder why there isn't any money in the skiing industry

Youre an idiot if you think that the reason for the ski industry crashing has to do with people being nice to each other on the internet. Why the fuck would any parent be excited about paying hundreds of dollars on equipment, and then drive to a mountain which costs more, and then spend an entire day at said mountain and then drive home after if it isnt their passion? Skiing is dying because its expensive, hard to pick up and requires a lot of time to become good enough to where it becomes interesting. this along with the fact the world economy is crashing gives good reason. If you dont think im right about the economy read a fucking newspaper and if youre upset cause Bishop doesnt give a fuck about people who stop by once or fucking sidesnacks then youre an idiot. A loyal small community of daily or weekly visitors to the site is way more important.
