meh i like the look of a big ol fart can lol.

coilovers would be nice but that's something i don't want to cheap out on so it'll be a while before i start looking at a set. and like i said i kinda like the look of a big tip exhaust. but yeah i was going to focus on handling and bracing before i put anymore hp into it. it just doesn't really make sense to have a quick car that handles like a bag of dicks.

im partially with the other guys, keep the higher performance exhaust, i mean if youre really going for looks, modify the exhaust tip rather than spend money to downgrade to a lower performance exhaust system because you like the look of the tip better...

absolutely handling/wheels before power, what good is having a huge bump in horsepower/torque if you cant use it?

That exhaust already on there sounds and looks sick, if you get an n1 exhaust with nothing else (headers, resonators) it sounds raspy on a wrx at high rpm's. Im still jelly I dont have a wrx or a cool car by any means.

i meant that HE liked the way the n1 sounds and looks over the cobb that came on his car. personally i would go cobb over the n1 as well, especially because the cobb is going to work better with the accessport

I like n1's sound on most cars but unless he gets uel headers itll be raspy at high rpms. They just look bad when the whole muffler is out there.

Ok does anyone else here have parents that dont understand owning and modding a car? Im trying to convince my mom since shes a bit easier to talk to about selling my car after I get a good amount of money this summer. I mentioned I would prefer a sedan or hatchback and she just lectured me on how her and my dad pay for all the things parents usually would pay for. My brother has a modded dsm that he got for $800 and runs very well and she knows that. I would pay for most of the stuff myself with a consistent income and she knows that and that I am a "car guy" considering I am always working with my brother on his car and going to meets and everything.

what's under the hood? nothing grinds my gears more than a car with $10K worth of rims, bodywork, & air-ride with a bone stock engine. Might not be my style, but you're definitely crushing the look you're going for, congrats!

Would it surprise you if I said I have put just over $2k into this car? Everything is done by myself and I've managed to get get deals/sponsorships where ever possible.

Its a normal 2.3L mazda 3 with an intake and exhaust and that oil cooler. Lots of custom diy suspension mods and a big beefy skid plate. Its on raceland ultimo coilovers (say what you want but they ride fine and get low). I wrapped the car myself and did the widebody myself. The company that makes my wheels sponsored my car so I got like 70% off.

I love when people ask me where it was built or who wrapped it or how much I've spent and I blow their minds. Resourcefulness goes a long way. I'm getting a set of corbeau RRS racing seats in exchange for some video work as well.

Thanks for appreciating my car for what it is. I'm super happy with it!

oh of course not. Especially a car that "old" (old being a relative term). The components that are going to give you the most problems are suspension components, so you might as well swap them out now. I don't know what the market for subie parts is, but i imagine they're cheaper and more accessible than mazdaspeed parts, so I'm sure you can find a solid coilover kit in the $800 range.

that's awesome. congrats man, a lot of hard work went into that and that can be appreciated it. Have you thought about going turbo? obviously, the platform is somewhat tolerant to BT and with corksport rolling out a slightly-larger-than-stock bolt-on turbo replacement, it may be worth is for a little more zoom-zoom.

a good set of coilovers are about $1600+. which is why i'll probably be waiting a while until i can afford it :/

CAR SHOWDOWN.

Decided to buy an old Z car for driving around in the summer. Trying to decide between these two... a 1982 280 ZX Turbo, and a 1984 300 ZX Turbo.

VERSUS

FgqRB8k.jpg

280ZX Notes

Pros:

-Only has 25,000 km. Absolute insanity. Lowest mileage I will likely ever see on one of these.

-More of a long-term project car; a number of things I'd change, such as...

-Some idiot replaced the radio with a CD deck, but fortunately they still have the original stereo apparently so would have to put that back in and undo the wiring nonsense they did.

-Seats are velour lowbacks with leather detailing; may need to swap them for fully leather buckets down the road.

-Biggest downside is it's an auto tranny. It's possible to do a conversion to 5sp manual but it's a major undertaking. Would probably wait a couple years before taking that one on.

-I like the front end better with the 70's style headlights.

-Garage kept. No paint issues at all.

-Some issues that may need repair; AC is semi functional.

300ZX Notes

-I always wanted one of these when I was a kid.

-90,000km; still quite low but not insanity-low like the 280.

-Overall appears to need basically nothing. So, less of a project car.

-Is super duper 80's. I think that's a point in favour, but I do prefer the body of the classic 280 a bit.

-The dash is fully digital which is basically the coolest thing ever; also, again, 80's as fuck

-Electric pop-up headlights: 80's 80's 80's.

-Leather appears in good shape.

-Is a manual

-Would have to buy it remotely and have it shipped (I'm heading to the area where the dealership is in 3 weeks), then get an out of province inspection done. Which is a bit of a hassle.

-Buying it remotely involves buying it sight unseen, which means I have to trust the dealer somewhat. They are a reputable dealer, though.

Unless you get a z32 300zx Id get the 280z, they look sweet and are so rare, my neighbor has a 240z that he is still restoring. Both are cool ass cars!

Ugh I would never buy a Z32 just based on looks. The front end of that thing was the worst of the 1990's car styling. Just awful.

For me the deal breaker would be the transmission. I couldn't see myself enjoying the automatic at all.

Right now I am going to keep it as is and just drive the engine until its pretty close to its death because it has 240k km and burning some oil. I used to drive it in the winter but this year im going to get a new winter car so that should give me a chance to work on this thing during the winter months. My current plan is to do a 2.5L block swap from a ford fusion( aka. cheap stroker kit) and then boost that. It wouldn't be anything crazy, maybe 10psi on something like the corksport turbo but would bring the the car alive and into the low/mid 200hp range which would be more than enough for that car.

For winter I'm going to import a 1998-2000 ish JDM Forrester STB which should be a lot of fun too.

13438840:BenWhit said:
good point! do that instead. The focus RS looks to be a pretty fun car.

The RS is the future plan, luckily I took a job engineering at Ford headquarters so I can get a new car every year or two if I want.

Thanks.

Interesting company and cars.

Got more specs on your car?

I really like the looks of the rear, got some nice retro style in it, not really matching the modern nose imo but really cool car though!

Total cost?

I will be into mine about 20k. being that I work at a subaru performance shop helps with parts cost and labor doing it all myself. I fully built the motor, chassis, car, everything. I will be running a gt35r with a tial .63 hotside. On q16 fuel aiming for about 500whp. Tuned by myself as well. Car weighs in at 1800lbs with everything. So a pretty decent. 3.2lb/hp or so. Should light the tires up.

can you elaborate more? I went to the website, it seems like a really cool business idea/model.

I'd say go with this one the manual unless you can do the manual swap on the 280 yourself or have already found a shop that will do it cause usually that sort of stuff tends to be a huge pain.

I just got a '98 Grand Cherokee with a V6 engine, and surprisingly it has no visible rust on the body of the car, not to mention it has 119k original miles. I'll post pics of the car once I pick it up this weekend.

i kinda regret not getting a little bigger offset so the wheel matches up with the fender and i was thinking about wheel spacers, but i just hear so many bad things on wear on different parts and loss of performance. are these ones suppose to be different? i've never seen them like that before.

5mm is generally safe and 10mm is common, but in my mind, anything beyond that is excessive and puts your car at risk.

Hell yeah. I wanna have a couple thousand miles on it just so it's nice and broken in. These cars have been making some nice gains without any bolt ons and just a tune so I'm curious to see what I can get out of it.

The perrin piece is just a shift stop to take up some of the vagueness in the shifter.

I'd definitely prefer not to run spacers but the stock offset really tucks the wheels in and once I install the springs it'll look even worse. These spacers use extended studs to make sure the lugs get plenty of engagement and I don't think 15mm is too aggressive. People are out there running some huge spacers.

These kind sketch me out but people seem to have no problem running these either.

yeah 15mm should be safe. i ran 2 inch spacers on a lifted truck i had a while back. although i really didn't give a shit about it either haha. pretty sure they were the kind pictured too lol

since we're on the topic of new parts..

new rad, rad hoses and thermostat came in today. between this and the bigger expansion tank i put in i don't ever see my car over heating again.

you know, for future reference, that grille actually comes out and its a lot easier and less risky to paint rather than masking everything off. and you can get ALL of the chrome rather than miss spots that the spray might miss for whatever reason. not hate, giving you a heads up haha. itll chip less if you get all the way to the edge of the chrome grille bits and you can do a much more comprehensive job
