News comments fused with Forums?

What I've noticed over time here on NSers is that there are lots of great conversations going on within the Forum AND/OR in News comments sections, but they are two separate conversations. My question: is there a way to fuse these two so conversations are not segregated?

1. When a brand new article is posted in the News section an automatic thread is created in its respective Forum (Ski Gabber, Non-Ski Gabber, Media & Arts, etc...). Perhaps it even has a sticky for that 1 day when it goes live.

2. If a user makes a comment in the News article, then the Forum automatically updates with that same comment.

3. If a user makes a comment in the Forum thread, the News article comment is also automatically updated with that same comment.

....

Just a thought, seems like a lot of work to implement this, but I just feel like there are so many places that the same conversations are happening and this could potentially help bring members together on one string for that specific topic.

First of all, there are way too many articles created to just have a thread created for each one, that wont work.

Second of all, the reason we updated the comment system was so that you could have discussions in photos/videos/news via the comment section, so that people didnt have to post threads abou tit

Third, that would take WAY TOO MUCH work to make that happens haha like you dont even know.

We always appreciate ideas for the website, but this one is just unrealistic.

1. Agree, there is a ton of content. So maybe it's just more high-level news or approved contributors.

2. My pt exactly, too many places for discussions on the same topic.

3. Yes, hence my comment in the OP. Like, I do know haha. Take it easy bud

I was taking it pretty easy haha

I think your #2 is a bit unreasonable, the reason we made the comments how they are now is so that the conversation would only take place in the comments and not separately in the forums.

You've overthinking this situation, its not like we don't think about this stuff, we beat ourselves in the head with ideas until we figure out whats best, just trust us.

Why would you want to separate conversations out from the forums? For more page views and exploration of the site? Were forums getting too busy with new threads, etc...?

We changed the comments so people could converse within a video page or news page because thats what people wanted, making a thread about every video/news article would take up half the page of the forum, so yes, it would take up too much and would be insanely redundant.

agreed, making a thread about all photos, videos, etc... would overload forums. My OP was about News. In my mind, it would be for more "mainstream" topics from approved or veteran contributors. But whatever, you guys have a ton to manage so it was just an idea bc to me these topics seem fragmented a bit. I'll just keep surfing the NS so you can serve me more Hidden Valley Ranch ads :)

I mean, if you want to make a thread about a topic, you should. We just dont need a thread for every news item.

The other factor here is that the nature of comments are very different from forum discussions. The way it's threaded, the style of conversation, the weight on the "OP" - quite a lot is different.

I have long pondered exactly what you suggested, having no distinction between forum thread and content piece - but as Heath said we've discussed implementation a million ways from Sunday and have always come up with it being an awkward concept.

What is the purpose for you suggesting this? Like what do you really want? One place to view everything, or more activity in the forums?

In a way, both. This likely falls in line with the "there is so much content out there" category and avg attn spans of users. As more ppl get into freeskiing and more content floods the internetz it's tough to say where the pulse of the industry is at nowadays.

keep up the great work guys! this wasnt meant to be a bash on the site, just more of a discussion pt.

I miss those days too. Social media kind of blew the lid off the idea of being one single place to get everything. Right now, you just have to follow shit absolutely everywhere....

We have tried a few ideas with the hot list on the homepage to make it more of an aggregator where everything out there is up... but there was too much resistance from other media to make it really work.

We'll keep on it. One day there will be a solution. :)
