Hey fellow skiiers =D

I have skiied for around 6 years now and what to get into freestyle a bit more. I am currently 16 and live in the United Kingdom.

I can already do small tricks if you class it as a trick lol, such as an Ironcross. But nothing involving spins. I think one problem I have is knowing how much speed and when to pop off a jump.

Obviously living within the United Kingdom I don't have a home mountain, I have a dry ski slope instead. I am planning on hitting their freestyle night in a few weeks time (Gotta wait for my helmet to arrive).

But I wanna know what's the best stuff to start with and how it'll be good to progress?

Trips on rails would also be goood, never seem to be able to ride them at all. I can 50/50 them but then can't every one!

^^ Feels like an essay =P

Thanks people

Daz

With rails its more the begining on the rail. Just a bit confused on what to do... I end up on the floor lol

I thought It could be because i'm going too slow...?

Speed is good. And remember to spin the 90 degrees onto the rail before you land on the rail. If you land at 45 degrees and try to turn the last 45 while you're sliding, you'll probably just slide off. Pop, set, land.

going fast definitely helps. it took me like two years to learn rails well, what i noticed is i was never comitting to the rail. you have to get onto it fully intending to slide the whole thing and not just slide off. after a while it comes so naturally its a blast man good luck.

definitely have speed. it's easier to lose balance when going slow. and put your weight on your front foot so you don't slip and end up on your ass.

Ok well first of all since your not going to be on the slopes for another three weeks or so if you have a trampoline i would get on it so you can practice spinning and such. Also when you approach a jump or a rail you got to focus on what you are doing and have to just go for it and the more you practice the more you will progress and it will become easier to you. Determining the proper speed is key to hitting a jump, pulling a mad trick, and then stomping it and the best way to figure it out is by going off of it and guessing what you think the proper speed is. Then after you go off you can say Ok i need more speed or less speed if i want to try whatever trick is on your mind. Also you can watch other skiers go off of whatever jump that you want to hit and see how fast they are going but keep in mind that different people's sizes and weight and such makes them go faster or slower but in short there is no real way to know exactly how fast to go to hit a jump the first time. I just go off a new jump at the speed of whatever i pick up as i progress toward hitting it. Then when you do hit the jump you want to lean back slightly and i mean slightly because if you lean back to much unless your trying to pull a back flip. So yeah hope this helps some.

Yeh I've heard this before, Never tried it though. So it actualy works?

Plus what about the tricks ect from my first post?

o wait sorry i forgot to finish the backflip sentence thing. So anyway if you lean back to much when not trying to pull a back flip you could land on your back or just land funny in general and it is true that more speed on rails is better because you can lose your balance more easier when going slow then when going faster

Wicked I think I get the method of rails now. What if you were hitting a rail on the ground without a jump?

Such as the rounded ones (Sorry don't know the name)

And

Whats the best tricks to start off with?

for rails i heard a really good tip once.

imagine you are running up to a stationary skateboard and jumping on it (so that the board rolls forward), do it like that but with skis on.

and with spinning 3s, keep your vision and shoulders horizontal. dont look down. if you see someone whos pretty good, ask for help, most people like helping others. hope that help, good luck

well the best tricks to start out with are 180's and 360's for spin and such witch like i said earlier if you got a trampoline you can practice on and as far as the other rails your talking about goes i must say is basically the same concept because there the same except for the jump part. Oh and with spinning you can also play around with going off a jump switch or landing a jump switch, witch if you want to start with 180's your going to have to land switch or go off switch. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the answers so far... Big help =D

Another question!

I have never hit a jump whilst switch... Is it the same as riding it normal, Just looking over a shoulder?

Don't think about switch man, it sounds like you have to focus on the basics first.

What's your skiing ability like?

And where are you skiing? Which dry hill?

I'll help out in a bit.

the best advice i can give you for rails and almost every trick is to commit. Especially if you don't want to get nutted on a rail it is important to fully commit to it. This means turn a full 90, and not just ur skis like a twister, your whole body and it helps if you know your going to make it. Be sure of yourself and visualize!

i would get solid at 180s and 360s before doing rails, just so you get your balance. and on rails its important to have your legs a little more than shoulder length, super balanced, focus on the end of the rail.

he's right sorry if i got ahead of myself helping you don't worry about switch yet but once you get there. Yes switch is the same as riding non switch but looking over your shoulder. Also do you have park skies as in twin tip skies because going switch and riding park is much more difficult without park skies and if you don't i would get some for sure.

Ok i'm confused i just looked at your profile for the first time because i remember that in your profile you say what skies you got and anyway i answered my own question but also noticed that you said you can pull a backflip and a 10? Did you mean 10 as in 1080 because if thats true then wtf?

i'm not trying to be mean in fact i am really trying to help you out but however am now really confused.

He has that listed under favorite tricks, not best trick. So I think he means he likes to watch those.

I've skiied for 6 years and can ski blacks. So Good I guess, I can also ride switch although I'm working on it.
