Newb question about camera file names

when you look at the files from a digital camera, they have some kind of name (ie GRPR0933, PICT0543, CIMG2231). these names are all unique to every single shot, regardless of memory cards or resets right? what I'm trying to say is, the first shot using memory card one on my camera will have a different name then the first shot on memory card 2 on the same camera, right? and do firmware updates/formats change this? and when do the numbers go back to zero?

that probably sounded really confusing, im in the process of going through my harddrive which is a mess full of numerous copied files, and am worried about accidentally deleting stuff.

massive +k to anyone who can help.

threadsI think with canon cameras they are always individual, but they might reset on firmware updates or something. I know that every time I format my memory card I don't get duplicate file names. The camera probably manages that that and counts how many videos/images its recorded over all the memory cards.

you should really get into the habit of renaming files on your computer because its a good organizational step but also helps keep track of videos and will never mix them up. im pretty sure the numbers only go up to like 4 or 5 digits or whatever depending on your camera but i am pretty sure they never reset at zero. its like an odometer and once you max out the numbers it just starts over so say you have like 9999 clips then your next one might be 0001 or something like that. ive almost run into this problem on with gopro clips and if you try and put same numbered clips in the same folders, you might replace a video if that makes sense. i haven't had that problem on my 60d cuz i always rename once their on my comp but im pretty sure they dont start over at zero.

This. Rename on import. I go for AlbumName_YYYYMMDD_XXXX.extension .

Read your manual if you want to know about your specific camera.

while we're at it, i shall explain why YYMMDD is a good system: it sorts things out in the order they were taken, meaning that newer things will appear lowest on the list, and you will always have a good overview.

is there a way to have it automatically apply the YYMMDD thing to all of the clips names? What program would you use to do that (does adobe have something that does this? I have the cs6 video suite)
