New Videos: DJI Phantom + GoPro Color Before/After

I just finished a little aerial sunset piece using a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition mounted to a DJI Phantom. This was my first time thoroughly coloring GoPro content and I am very impressed with how well everything held up!

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the shots before and after all correction/grading.

Edited in Premiere Pro CC and color corrected/graded in Davinci Resolve 9 Lite.

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts, both on the piece as a whole and the color work. I'm happy to answer any questions and also could make a more in-depth cross-section of the coloring to show the different stages of the process if anyone is interested.

Thanks for looking!

i liked it, although i feel that especially after watching the comparison video, i was aware of the lost detail in the blacks, personally i think ti would have been nice to keep some of th detail in, and just keep the scene slight less dark.

Wow, thats some of the best phantom footage I've seen. Do you use a wireless monitor to get the footage?

I did intentionally bring the overall brightness of the image down in the grade to emphasize the sunset/nightfall scene, but after looking back at a few of the shots, I agree there are some blacks that are crushed a bit too hard. Thank you!

nice work! thought the color correction looked great compared to original footy. especially for a gopro. I'm assuming you must have stabilized this in post... or a DJI H3-2D gimbal if you didn't do that in post, very smooth for a phantom so that was impressive! keep it up! also curious if you mainly use ATTI or GPS when flying that far away and above water? My phantom had a fly away GPS error and it literally went 1000 ft up and about a mile to the west, luckily ranchers found it in their hay field the next day after I looked for hours haha! So I am scared/don't trust the GPS anymore at all. Looking forward to more!

Thats awesome, thanks for posting. Is the GoPro controlled separately? IE can you fly straight and while flying aim the GoPro to the left, right etc. How and with what did you attach the GoPro to the Phandom? Just the stock mount or something else?

@iLLbiLLy - This was with just the stock mount - no gimbal or any sort of vibration dampening.

@J-Munz - That is an absolutely TERRIFYING thought! I started flying in only GPS, but now fly a combination of the two. ATTI gives a lot more of a floating feel to shots, whereas GPS is much more rigid and precise. And yes, this was stabilized a bit in post.

@powderhound100 - I have the GoPro attached directly to the Phantom via the plastic mount provided, so I cannot control any aspect of the camera while it is in flight. Controlling the camera independently is possible with additional accessories (gimbals/gyroscopes).

@Moosen - Thank you! I actually haven't used Resolve since making this, but I absolutely loved working in the program during the color work. However, actually getting the files and timeline into Resolve was kind of a messy process with needing to relink media and re-encode some files. I still haven't quite nailed the roundtrip workflow from Premiere Pro.
