New Toyota ads suck

The new Toyota ads really blow, 30 seconds on every video? I just had a 30 second ad for an 8 second video and the video didn't work the first time so I had to refresh, which meant a minute of ads for one video. That is just too much. I understand that NS needs ad revenue and those ads are good money but why does it have to be every video? The ads should always be as long or shorter than the actual video in my opinion.

Agree. I haven't watched a video in a few days because of it and I used to just browse through the video section often as do a lot of people.

I actually came here to see if anyone posted something about it. However, I'm sure Toyota paid well to make sure that they were 30 seconds.

I normally do not complain about ads, but these are the worst ads I've ever encountered. At least get some skiing related ads. Or ads that don't take 30 seconds to get through.

Seriously man, these ads are almost unbearable.

Where did those really short Momentum ones that were like 6 seconds go? I don't know if it's me but I thought ads are only suppose to come up for like every couple of videos you watch, not every single one.

Honestly, I just miss being able to mute ads. I usually have a few video tabs open at a time because I used to watch one edit while another was loading/going through the ad. Now I can't really do that because I just hear the ad over the other edit.

No mans land...what does that even mean?

God i'm so sick of these, at least have a skip ad button like on youtube.

yeah theyre lame ads but i can get over that

what irks me is having to watch the ad again if i want to watch the video again

Try to remember that despite the ads sucking, they are what keep the doors open.

Haha I was not on here for that but I know exactly what ad you are talking about. God that must have been super obnoxious.

Yeah I don't understand why the toyota ads are so bad, they're decently calm, kinda cheesy but whatever theyre not annoying to me at least. Just another great example of how spoiled these kids are.

I do feel like not having the ability to mute them sucks, but I dont see the need to be watching one edit while waiting the 30 second ad for another plays. If you are that impatient go read the forums for the 30 seconds that the ad is loading for.

or god forbid hit the mute button on your keyboard...

Honestly people its not that hard.

His issue is that he cant watch edits while watching edits. He must consume ski media at a rate of 9001steezes per minute and steeze can not be had during Toyota commercials.

Then go watch edits on youtube or vimeo.

Newschoolers would be better without him anyways if he's bothered by something this trivial.

And were all on computers, on the internet, probably somewhere decently comfortable... we're all spoiled, "kid"

Please don't complain to me about ads anymore, its mind blowing you guys STILL care so much about a completely acceptable ad. Do you watch cable tv? There is 8mins of annoying commercials for every 22 mins of content, no one complains about that, they just change the channel, mute the tv or just deal with it, which is exactly what you should do with online videos as well.

Its only going to get worse, hell watch a tv show on hulu and you have like 5 breaks in a 30 min show with 2 mins of stupid ads that are the same every time AND thats if you pay for hulu plus!

So please, stop complaining about a free website delivering you videos of your favorite sport, for no extra charge and all you have to do is watch a 30 second ad thats not even that bad.

TBH the 30 sec toyota ads are a bit too much for me even. I've stopped watching videos for the most part, but I still don't run ad block. This is probably the first time I've done so....

at least with cable tv, 8 mins gives you enough time to do something else. 30 seconds for a 2-3 minute video is an awkward time and pretty ridiculous in my opinion...

If I still had the option to mute ads or even skip after 6 seconds, it wouldn't be so bad.

On a related note, how does using adblock hurt ns financially?

Ad revenue is one of the biggest incomes for NS, when those ads are blocked NS doesn't get revenue from them. So the more people using AdBlock, the less money NS gets from ads.

My question is how does using adblock cause NS to loose ad revenue. If a user is running adblock, how specifically does that loose NS money?

Say I cover up all the ads in a magazine, or leave the room during a commercial break on TV, that does not make the magazine or TV show loose money.

No. Since it's on a website it tracks whenever a page loads and you actually see the ad. If you use adblock the ad doesn't even show up so you don't even get to see it.

I'm pretty sure they get more money if you actually click on the ad too.

Unlike print or TV, web ads can count how many people have viewed them, so when an ad is blocked it doesn't load and therefore isn't counted as a view, since online ad companies pay per view when you use adblock you take away from the view count and therefore the revenue.

Ok, so maybe it works differently with bigger ad packages, but I once advertisted on NS and paid something like a $100 for 10,000 impressions. NS gets the $100 and that isn't changed if users are running adblock or not.

I'm not trying to debate the fact that adblock hurts ad revenue, I'm trying to understand how it does.

You buying ads =/= google ads/other ad clients. I know NS sells ads to companies and such but the majority of rev comes from the generic banner ads you see on most websites that are controlled by an ad client, which you get paid on per page load.

Thanks, thats what I was wondering about.

Did you use the self serve system?

If so, then you bought say those 10,000 impressions. The $100 you paid will only go towards exactly 10,000 ad impressions.

Normally, we'd have to serve 10,000 page views to use your $100. However, imagine a certain amount of people are using adblock. We then need to serve 13,000 page views in order to bill you for 10,000 ad views.

You still pay the same $100 - but we have less overall impressions to sell. Those impressions being taken for adblock could have been sold to someone else for $30.

I was using the self serve system, and thanks for that explanation.

I just noticed that you can skip the Toyota ads now. Is that in response to the feedback?

We're in the process of a major upgrade to the entire video system. So you'll see some features pop up as we do that.

holy fuck i cant watch a single video without getting pissed. the old k2 adds were at least entertaining but these toyota ads are just long and annoying and unrelated to what this sight is all about. who the fuck on ns is in the market for a new toyota of all cars. if anything i just hate toyota 1000 times more than before these ads. i have stopped watching videos because of this. fuck these ads.

Nice shitposting. If an ad gets you that angry, you might want to look into anger managment.

Get your panties out of a twist. Toyota is great and deserves a high 5 for pissing off so many pre pubecent rich kids.

Nah fuck everyone whining about rich kids whining.

These ads suck no two ways about it. This is the internet, I want my shit now. I don't want to wait 30 seconds for a god damn 8 second video. Even fucking youtube get that.

one thing i will say in defense of the ads: at least they don't pop up in the middle of your video like some do on youtube, that shit is obnoxious

i think people have every right to complain about ads-- they wouldn't pay out the ass to run them everywhere in our lives if they weren't gaining from it, so don't act like it's some magical benevolent "free" product supporter, because if youre watching an ad on something free you ARE the product/service in some respects-- but it's worth noting that at least once you watch this long ad, you don't have to vigilantly watch out for ads that want to pop up 3/4 the way through a video

Unless people want to start donating vast sums of money every year to NS to keep the lights on, people need to stop bitching about the ads. This is what funds the website and thats its. Would you prefer that once a year NS slams you with ads and threads and posts begging for money because if they dont get it the site will shut down? I certainly wouldn't want that.

i mostly agree with you guys but i don't think youre doing a great job arguing your point with these strawman arguments. i don't think anyone has suggested to NOT have ads-- people are complaining about specific ads.

so if, for example, this long/dumb toyota ad pays more than other ads that are more pleasing to the site's users, then great! say that. that's a good, convincing argument.

otherwise, accept that when people complain about some ads, there are viable alternatives and the opinions of the site's internet currency, users, should be listened to to some extent

at the end of the day, no, these ads aren't a big deal. at least it's outdoorsy stuff and somewhat aesthetically pleasing. but wholesale dismissal of complaints is sort of disingenuous

I don't have a problem with ads, I have a problem with bad advertisements. The Toyota ones were cool at first, but they are much too long, and since they play on every vid, they have become quite boring.

A well made ad wouldn't have this problem. If only there was someone who could create short and funny ads that NS'rs would enjoy watching.

The ads should be short and funny, like the ones Bloom has posted on FB: ompanies thats want to advertise on NS could contact this person and have him make an ad that the community would appreciate. An ad that NS'rs would enjoy watching would benefit both the advertiser and the audience.

If every company used you to make ads that would actually be amazing. You should re make the toyota add just to see what happens.

I like Ads that are:

Skiing related

Short (15 seconds or less).

If an ad has at least one of these requirements, then I have no reason to complain.

The Toyota ads are:

Not skiing related

30 seconds

Annoying as fuck

Fuck these ads. Bring back ads like Line, Bloom, Marker, Target. Anything but these shitty ads
