New Skis, Sticky Edges

So I just got a new pair of skis and I was trying to play around, do some butters, and slide around a bit but the edges make it a challenge. They're sticking to/ gripping the snow like no other. What's NS recommend?

NO. Do not. You will eat shit on your first try and you could damage your edges too. Just go to the ski shop and ask to borrow a gummy stone. Follow what this lady does. (its the same on skis)

Just scrape down your edges under your boot where you will be sliding rails. Use a file, a piece of metal, a rock, or pretty much anything you can find that won't hurt your edges haha

What the fuck do you think you are talking about? Ive had over 10 pairs of park skis that I've dulled the edges on by sliding rails. Not once have I "eaten shit on my first try" or damaged my edges any more than slamming metal on metal damages already.

Jesus fuck just slide rails and the edges will dull naturally.

1. find stretch of road with no snow on it2. get someone to drive along said road at 30+ mph

3. sit in trunk, drag skis along the ground to dull edges

Bullshit. You can absolutely slide rails on new sharp edges. You need to be careful because yes they are sticky, but if you hit rails fast and confident (start with the easier stuff like flat rails) your shit will be detuned in a few runs.

Of course if you're a hardcore park skier and you know you're going to immediately grind the fuck out of your skis just rake the edges across concrete, file them down or use a disc sander. Do it right out of the plastic, or even get the shop to do it when they mount them.

You and bish should take your thumbs out of eachothers ass'. You can rip edges out sliding them tuned, detuned is the safest way to protect your skis. After all, who wants to ruin a ski on their first run doing something 10000% not covered by warranty?

And stop being so condescending. I've seen numerous people hit rails with new skis catch and fall. Is it possible to do? Obviously. Is it also possible to fall and tear your acl, break your wrist, get a concussion etc.? ......

or just take a file to em at a bunch of different angles running down the edge where you don't want it to be sticky. I prefer going from the top of my toe piece to the bottom of my heel piece, about 4-6 inches towards the middle of the ski from wherever your tip/tail starts rising, and of course the whole round part to go with that.

its not that you're wrong, but this comment makes you sound like a pretentious dick that i can't help but hate.

Edges are overrated. just grind those fuckers down until there is no more. once finished sit back and watch the poon flock to you as you slide those rails with ease.

Dude, sharp edges have nothing to do with ripping your edges out. Also, the idea of using 'protecting your skis' and 'sliding rails' in the same sentence is completely false. You destroy your skis when you hit rails, full stop. If your edges rip out on the first go, then your skis suck.

Also, yes you're right you can catch with sharp edges. I don't recommend hitting a super technical rail on your fresh edge, but a couple of flatbars later and you'll be fine.

Trust me. When I was an athlete I would go through at least 4-6 pairs of new skis per year, and when I was reviewing park skis heavily I would try anywhere from 7-14 new pairs per year... sometimes more. Every single time each one of them had super sharp edges, and every single time I simply detuned them by taking 2-3 runs of sliding simple boxes rails to do the detuning.

The only time I'd say you absolutely need to detune your skis is if you're about to do a contest and you need to take a completely fresh pair in with you. Then, its key that you have absolutely no issues so just take a file/piece of concrete/tree/fence/disc grinder or whatever to 'em and go to town.

If you do more than just park I would bevel your edges. That's what I do and I can slide rails just fine while still holding an edge in a carve. If you just do park then definitely just detune underfoot and tips and tails.
