New Skier, Bad Knee, Any Suggestions?

Went skiing for the first time last year and absolutely loved it! Bought my first set of skis, and I'm ready to hit the mountain this winter. The only problem is that I had knee joint surgery 3 years ago, and I have some lingering pain and instability. Has anyone had a similar problem and how did you deal with it? Any suggestions for how I should get started? I would like to hit the park as much as the mountain. Is a knee brace a good idea?

knee brace is a must and take it easy injuring urself going to hard isnt work not skiing or working all winter

I would definitely have to throw in a vote for the Asterisk. My knees feel much more solid in them. I wear them every day and every day I forget I have them on by the time I'm to the chairlift. The best part is that they attach directly to your boot. This helps to transfer those twisting motions from your foot, past your knee, and to your femur.

They are kinda spendy, but I would highly recommend them.

you make it sound like your knees are really weak? maybe you should strengthen them before you start skiing

I damaged the articular cartilage in the joint of my knee, and the bone underneath That's what allows the joint to smoothly slide across itself. The instability isn't all that bad, my knee will just give out sometimes. I'm sure it's not nearly as bad as a torn ACL. Some days I don't notice any pain at all, and others it hurts all day.

get a knee brace and dont ski as hard as the others do.. just let ur skis take you. also try not to hit many jumps.... or you knees will get worse

i tore my lateral meniscus two seasons ago and i bought asterisk knee braces to ski with afterwards and my knees feel solid, its like having two super knees! defiantly look into getting some.

wearing a brace will only do so much when you're actually wearing it. i have a bad knee and a worse knee and i find that small things just like stretching when your watching t.v., tying your shoes a little tighter, trying to maintain your weight, light jogging occasionally, etc. in combination start to add up and you over time loose or lighten the need for a brace.
