Alright, so as of now i'm a Junior in high school and I am planning on going to the University of Maine for New Media, Which, if you didn't know, is associated with things such as film, photography, and media editing. Now i know, with all the photographers and videographers on NS, someone has to have majored in that. Any pointers on what i should study up on just to start off, i know the basics such as taking photos and taking videos then transferring them onto the computer and editing them and adding music and such. Any pointers anyone can give me?
+K to legit help.

The thing about college and degrees is that you don't need to learn anything before because thats why you go to college is to learn, so dont sweat it. Take some photos or video if you want, but you dont need to.

Nope you'll take a couple years of gen eds/comm major prerecs before you get into any filming/photo shit.

Learn and practice as much as you can before you go. If you're passionate about "film", then you'd be learning and creating before college anyways. If you aren't passionate about it, you're going for the wrong reasons, at least I think so. Film school wont turn you into a good film maker/producer/editor/whatever, that's up to you. Film school just gives you the skills and contacts to hone your natural ability. Why not be ahead by learning as much as possible before hand? You should always be learning and creating if you are into any sort of art form. So ya, teach yourself as much as possible.

I am far from a media major, but I love to film and edit, In my opinion if thats what you really want to do with your life your probably already doing a bunch of it now, if not no better time then now to really get into it and make sure its actually what you want to do.

Just practice a bunch is the best advice i can give you, try to actually learn it not just going out hand held with a camera or a point and shoot snaping a few clips and calling it good. If you have a basic understanding of it when your going in it will make it that much more enjoyable and you will learn much more. There is a big diffence between a good artist and an amazing artist no mater what the trade they call their art. For a program like that i feel like if your just doing the course work and nothing else chances are you wont be making a living off it. Good luck either way

another good idea might be to go into computer tech and business ... if your looking to start your own company or open one. because then you could do it all; fix and build computers, sell cams, computers, ect, and do professional photography and video. just my 2 cents though

That is what i was thinking of doing also, maybe go to Husson University for a business major, and then own a business and do video and photography on the side, i just want a well paying job as well, so i don't really have limits on when i can ski and how much i can spend.
