New lense for D40

i don't know much about nikon but i have the canon equivalent of that lens and it fucking blows. it's 75-300 f/4-5.6 and retails like 150 and it just sucks, slow focus, bad quality, overall i hate iti usually look for the cheapest thing possible but i've learned not to do that with lenses, you have to invest a little or else you'll get stuck with a massive piece of shitare you looking for something with long zoom like that to go with your stock lens or something in between or a wide angle, macro, anything, first figure out exactly what you want and then look around but i wouldn't suggest cheaping out on a camera lens

don't do it, in that price range if you want a new lens get the 50mm/1.8 for like $150. there is a reason that that particular 70-300 is so cheap. It sucks ass, it is basically a Tamaron lens with the Nikon badge on it. Save your pennys and get the lens I'm getting the nikon Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6 VR, that lens while considerably more expensive and not the best glass out there is a much better lens then that 70-300 you have posted.

IF you want a telephot get the 55-200mmVR then instead, about the same price and decent glass in the lens.

Hmm if im not mistaken "gray market" are nock off products, which would not be a good thing to have, especially with a lense. The description on that one specifically says "gray market" which i dont know why it would say that but i would say stay away. As mentioned above too, you dont want a cheap lense.

nahhh gray market isnt knock off, its legit. the reason it says that is that its like the imported model from japan or w.e, not the USA model. theres really no difference. if you look on B&H they call it "imported" not "gray market".
but dont get the 70-300. like they said, its garbage and theres a reason its so cheap. however, if you wanna keep it on the cheaper side, the 55-200 VR (you have to get the VR version, the other is junk) is a better option. i assume you have the 18-55 kit lens, so the 55-200 is a perfect option. and for the most part, 200mm is enough zoom for most situations. otherwise, the 50 f/1.8 is basically the only good lens under $200.
