New Lap Top?

For my freshman year at college next year I'm going to be getting a laptop, new, but not too expensive. Definitely not getting a Mac, so besides those, what are some good ones? The only one I know of so far is the Dell 600M.

You have to really be careful with PCs, because companies like Toshiba don't always advertise relevant statistics (assumedly, they think people won't know what they're talking about and won't bother to ask). They try to sell 133mhz ram without advertising the specifics, so you assume it's as good as the ram they put in Dells...guess what, it isn't.

i have a gigantic gateway desktop replacement. it's huge and heavy but it kicks ass. full size keyboards are def the way to go. i hate the small ones, and i even have small hands. my battery life isn't too shabby either. about 4 hours.

i gots a dell 8200 it sickie and got it fo graduation 2 yrs ago so halla.

I don't want a Mac because they're frickin' expensive. My parents don't have wads of cash to use, but they have some, and it looks like only PCs are in the price range.

yah i'm kind of exaggerating on the heavy part. it's only about 6.5 pounds but carrying it everywhere makes it feel heavier. it's about 2.5 inches thick and runs way faster than my parents desktop they bought last year.

my mom doesn't know the difference from a computer and a toaster so I thought we would get her a computer that is a little more like a toaster!

we got her a macintosh
 
I got a Athalon desktop from them it is great! and, this not so true for their notebooks (any notebook for that matter) but they are really easy to work on yourself! I overclocked my desktop from 2.08 ghz Athalon XP+ to a 2.2 ghz XP+ and since the case is so nice and cold it runs fine! I didn't have to add anything to it at all after overclocking
