NEW Karma system!

Hah well its not exactly new, but we took all your suggestions and are going to try something new with roughly the same formula.

However, its going to drastically change the amount of karma you have... the 1-100 thing really just seemed to put everyone around 50. Paul teamed up with a team of statistical mathematicians from MIT to figure out a new way to tweak the formula that calculates it...

Don't be surprised all of a sudden when your karma jumps anywhere from 5,000 to a couple million points. Now, its going to fluctuate a hell of a lot more, change instantly as you rate someone up or down, and still be based on a whole bunch of metrics from around the site.

So far it looks pretty good, but we'll just have to see what happenes when its released.

Should be later today or tomorrow, so don't be surprised when you see it!

Heh yeah it sure is! Its cool too Paul made a "Top 100 members" list too, so we can all see who ranks where!

sounds great im glad you guys keep working on the site my only gripe with it would be with numbers so high like you said and it not based on a 1-100 number is that we're going to see say a 1,000 and think holy shit thats really high but then later we're going to see like a 10,000 and we're just not going to be able to see the numbers that really matter.

Heh... the numbers are actually higher than that. I have over nine million karma. :)

We might have to normalise them a bit, but we'll try this out and see what happens. The system is good, we just need to figure out how to get thenumbers displaying correctly.

MIT...lol...score

Please explain the sense of scale when you implement it so people can grasp how it works.

I am forseeing a significant amount of bitching and comments:

"why am I not top 100, and he is GAWD!"

"FUCK Karma, I am the best member. DUH"

Oh it will be funny

True, but bitching will only result in neg. karma which will have an even worse impact!

We'll get more of a sense of the scale when we see it fluctuate. The whole thing now is that member-member ratings "Karma Xchange" is going to affect things much more. Its still going to be based on all of your actions as a newschoolers member, but the way the xchange is calculated is different. As well, before we normalized each of the scores by making them out of 100 and essentially put it on a bell curve. Problem is that there's so many accounts that don't do all that much, everybody was around 50.

So now, we just removed the limiter, and are using the raw points that you score plus changed up the formula. And it calculates on the fly, so you'll see how much you affect someone's karma right as you adjust it. The overall list will only be generated once per night (else it would overload the server) but you'll see what you've done.

We'll see... basically we're just trying to do something difficult which is create an automated system that ranks how "good" a member is. Tough thing to do!

If this one doesn't work we'll go back to the drawing board, but I think this round might be successful.

I think we're starting over from scratch, at least it looks like that. Everyone is at 0 right now.

so i just rated a member up and as i increased their karma, their displayed karma dropped until i got to 8

Yeaaaaaaaah definitely thought all these finals had been getting to me when I saw a 5-digit karma rating. Sick revision though, it's good to see a direct response to the karma I give or take away from someone. Yayyy good work. karma for you guys!

you know its working when yauch's karma is only at 529 and everyone else's is at least 1000.

it would also be pretty funny if you made a shame list with the site's top 100 jackasses

Nice work Doug, Paul and MIT heads ha. Interesting. I was like "WTF??!?!?! I better check site discussion"

these numbers are just too ridiculous. im not a fan at all, maybe putting it out of 1000 would have been better than 100, but this is just too much.

i have a suggestion to make the extreme numbers less extreme. base everyones karma off the highest ranked member and have it show as a percentage and a number. obviously the highest rated would be a 100 but say an average nser would be 50. i know it would be alot like the old system but i think it would work better since it would still be constantly changing. plus the percentage would actually mean something. say if your karma is a 42%, you still have higher karma than 42% of the users. i dont know how inactive accounts would affect this though..

so were there just to many members for it to work effectively? and why were there so many people in the 45-55 range and no one below 45?

i noticed jibtechs xchange was 3 yet he is still on the top 100 so im guessing the karma still has other heavy weights other than just the xchange
