New Camera

Right now i have a canon vixia hf200 and i have been saving up money for a long time and i was thinking about getting a new camera. The camera's picture quality is not as good as i had wanted.
Price range - 800$ maxExpectations - HD, 60fps
Recomendations are appreciated. Thanks everyone. If you could, just leave links in the comments.

... a hundred bucks isn't gonna buy you much glass. IMO a minimum amount for a HDDSLR setup is 2500.

you also are a ridiculous filmer/editor who has higher expectations then us noobs...my rig is 1500 and is sexy...works well for my low key shit i do

well still, he only has 800 not 1500... and "us noobs" shouldn't be buying HDDSLR setups, IMO.

ahah he can make a few hundo...and yes i would agree but i do anyway because i can...not neccesarily a noob but in comparison to you i am

Don't get a DSLR budget with that much money. Period.

You can't get any nice glass.

You can't get any stabilization.

You can't get acceptable sound quality.

You can't avoid an ergonomic mess.

Ever watched unstable DSLR footage? It is TERRIBLE.

What about a 7d? I saw an edit and the quality was amazing. The camera is about 13 hundred but do you think I need anything else with it? I can prob find one cheap

basic HDDSLR is minimum 2500 yes.

i have the basic T3i with the 18-55mm kit lens and i spend over 1500 only in accessories so im at 2500 and i do not even have a good lens. so yes 2500 is really the MINIMUM. probably gonna spend 800$ on a lens so i'll be at 3200$ with a deent setup.

7d has the exact same sensor as the T2i, meaning the quality is no different. I'd actually prefer a T2i because it has Magic Lantern.

800 will get you either a decent body or a shitty cam with shitty lens

look at the hv30

or i have a hdr-cx-550v id sell you for like 800 shipped with a handle and fisheye

nope.

not nearly enough, listen to eheath and every other knowledgeable filmer in this thread. what good lens is he gonna buy with that much? and dont say 50mm f/1.8, because that is a terrible single lens

you have an HF200, one of the better non-hdslr cameras out there. whats wrong with it?

it won't.

filmed with my t2i in rain and blizzards, never had a single problem.

have you had that happen? if not, stop saying that. i'm tired of hearing that because the t2i is much more durable than people think. if it did, damn, sorry man. that's some bad luck.

thomas doesn't or hasn't owned a t2i, and it has not happened to him that I know of. People shit on t2i's too much >:(

soooooooooo annoying. people think that because the 7D is more weather resistant than a T2i, that automatically means the T2i will break with any moisture whatsoever. DEFINITELY not a reason to buy a T2i. the T2i is already very durable. no need for a 7D for standard ski filming over a T2i

ive made up my mind and i want a t2i. ive been watching a buncha edits recently and the t2i looks perfect for me. im not sure what else i would need with the camera. like lenses, attatchments, etc.

For your Budget of 1100, I don't see a T2i in your future..

For Instance an average cost for the T2i, is what like $750?

That leaves you 350 bucks for everything else and no money for the future. If I was you I would hold off for a little while until you have more money then look at buying a refurbished T2i, some nicer glass, and a good tripod/glidecam.

he is right.

unfortunately, 800, or even 1000, will not be nearly enough.

you will need at least two lenses, memory cards, extra batteries, stabilization if you don't have any, and probably a mic, even if it's just a cheap one.

i wouldn't even say that i have an amazing DSLR setup and I've put over $3k into it.

if you aim for as cheap a setup as possible (while still building a solid setup) you will need one 16gb class 10 SD card, an extra battery, canon 50mm f/1.8, tamron 17-50 f/2.8, plus a refurbished T2i. that will definitely put you well over your budget.

i dont think he will need 2k for lenses and accessories. 350 for tamron 17-50, 150 for canon 50mm, battery grip plus batteries 50 bucks, at most 100 bucks in SD cards, 120 for rode mic. glidecam 350.

around a grand is ideal

17-50 and 50 prime is kinda pointless, unless you shoot a lot of low light shit. It doesn't do you too well if you have to shoot any telephoto. At least get an 85mm prime instead of the 50mm. Here's my ideal lens list, I dont shoot much low-light stuff:

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 450 new, 350 used

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 500 new

Canon 70-200 f/4 L 700 new 550 used

Thats a pretty solid set of lenses, covers some good focal lengths. And thats $1,650 in lenses if you buy new. If you toss out the 28-75 you still are looking at $1,150 in lenses. Lenses are something you should spend a lot of money on, way more than the HDDSLR body.

yeah i guess your right. but im guessing his dad knows a bit about photography and has a nice lens or 2, not just the t2i and kit lens.

Don't count chickens before they hatch... The T2i is a consumer based camera. Most people shooting with rebel series DSLR's dont go much farther than the kit lens, that's just my observation though. Maybe I'm wrong.

gonna have to disagree i think. i have very distinct uses for my 17-55mm vs my 50mm f/1.4. i personally like the way the glass looks a little more, it's much smaller, it has shallower dof, and i would rather shoot through prime glass than shoot through glass that is zoomed in.

i have the 17-55, 50, and 85 and i consider it a pretty perfect lens setup. don't plan on buying any new lenses anytime soon.

so i thought the camera was a t2i because when i typed in the name on the box (canon rebel), the first one that popped up was a t2i. It turns out the camera i have is a 350d which apparently doesnt record video. so im going to buy a t2i most likely but is there anything that i NEED for it? anything thats really necessary to have? sorry for the confusion and thanks for all the hellp everyone

I suggest you buy a refurbished T2i, BODY ONLY. If you can afford it, buy the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC lens. Also buy an extra battery and a 16gb Class 10 SD card. That should keep you set for a while and won't cost you too much. If you don't have any stabilization, you need to invest in that too.

Later on, you should buy either the 50mm f/1.8 or the 85mm f/1.8, or both if you can.

a 17-50 2.8 and a 50mm 1.4 look much different. plus, using any zoom at its longest length isnt very good, even a 70-200mm 2.8 @200 looks worse than @190.

not necessarily. I'm not saying it's not good to have some good money to put into your setup but you can get a pretty decent setup for relatively cheap.

I currently have a canon t2i and bought it with the kit lens through the canon loyalty program for about $540. I sold the kid lens for $90 on ebay. This means i got the t2i body for $450.

Since then i've bought:

Intervalometer- $30

Tripod- $100

Canon 50mm 1.8 - $100

Raynox 17-50 2.8- $400

Case- $20

Extra Battery and 2 16gb Class 10 cards- $50

Total: $1150

Obviously my setup isn't complete and I still need to put down money for a tele-zoom lens and a stabilizer in the future. but as for now my tripod works pretty damn well for a stabilizer and overall i'm pretty happy with my setup for the money i've put into it. I'm just saying that it is possible to have a decent setup to work with until you make more money to purchase lens/stabilization/etc.

but you have a $100 tripod, a $20 case, and no mic.

also, add tax + shipping onto that, probably over 1200

Learn how to use a camera before buying an intervalometer. I think they're pretty tough.

$100 wont get you much for a tripod. A fluid tripod is 200 at cheapest.

50mm is alright, but they cost 125 new and most people don't sell their's so you gotta buy new.

Dont waste your time with the raynox. Get the tamron 17-50 non vc for the same price. much sharper.

idk cases but I know a photo back with ICU is at least 125 for a shitty one.

2 16 gig class 10's will run you about $100. I paid $50 for one on bh. And batteries aren't cheap unless you buy shitty 3rd party ones.

You're really gonna want a lot more to start out, at least a better tripod. Ditch the intervalometer and put it towards the battery and memory. Ditch the 17-50 for a tamron 17-50, get a better case if you plan on using it while skiing.
