look for a used Nikon D40 or Canon XTi....
You could prob find a Canon XT or a Nikon D50/D70 if your not having luck with the D40 or XTi....they have less features and a smaller viewing screen than the D40 or XTi but if you can find one for cheap it would be a decent beginner camera
