Need help with backies

I’ve been doing backflips off piers and boats except I go straight up instead of back and almost hit my head. I am used to doing flips on trampoline so I’m not used to going far back when doing backflips. Any tips to go further back so I don’t crack open my skull?

Start doing flips off of really tall shit, you should be able to focus on jumping back and less on the rotation of the flip.

Do some back flips off rope swings. That way you get used to the movement while still flipping.

I have this exact same problem. I'm happy sending backflips off large kickers in the park but terrified to backflip off a 6ft pier into water, I can't get past the mental block which makes me think I'm going to hit my head. as I've seen videos of me before and I'm fucking close to doing it.

Exactly it’s terrifying because I know I’m only about 3-6 inches away from obliterating myself out of existence and I can’t figure out how to back at all

You actually don’t want to travel when doing standing backies. Like that means you have good form. Not ideal for your purposes but going straight up is a good thing lol.

Instead of spotting ahead of you and pulling your knees up to flip(which is probably want you’re doing since you don’t travel back) just throw your arms and head back like you’re doing a back handspring. This will naturally arch your back and send you outward instead of up and down. Be careful though, you’ll probably feel like you’re flipping too fast and compensate by slowing your rotation down but the second half of the flip is going to be slower that the first half when you set it this way. You’ll also be able to spot your landing a lot sooner so that’s kind of a perk.
