Need Help w/ Final Cut Pro X.

I'm a beginner editor and i'm having an issue with final cut pro. Im gonna keep this short as possible, but for some reason i can't add any transitions between clips. I've tried everything. I don't know all the terms but i tried dragging it from the transition menu on the right, I've right clicked the clips, i've done everything.I couldn't find anything on google search or youtube so i've resulted to you media and arts guys. the transitions just won't show up!

any help will be appreciated.
 
Drag one of the clips forward so there is a gap in between them then just drag the transition between them.

or drag a video layer ontop of another one and manual add key frames to drop the opacity at whatever start and end points you need to get a smooth transitions...
