Need help on choosing a nice camera

I need help finding a good beginners camera that is weather resistant(obviously for skiing),but also takes good pics.I am going to be taking pictures of skiing and and landscapes/outdoors type stuff. I was leaning towards a Nikon D40 or a Pentax K20. And, what editing software would work well with it? ALL help would be appreciated!
 
dont get a pentax. u really want to stick with either canon or nikon. i have a D60 so its basically a D40 and its a great cam. if u no how to use a camera then u can get some serious shots from it.

the reason u want to stick with nikon and canon is basically their reliability and how long they have been in the business. their lineup of lenses are amazing and are very sharp
 
nice is relative, give us a price range

i like nikon myself, but for dslr's it is more or less between nikon and canon
 
whats wrong with pentax ? also, WHY only canon and Nikon ?

pentax's cameras are money.

i think pentax has been a camera company before nikon but i could be wrong.

just because it's not canon or nikon doesnt mean a person couldnt get the same shot if they were to shoot with lets say a nikon.

yes i shoot nikon but dont downgrade pentaxs
