Need advise buying ski rack for volvo

I dont know anything when it comes to this but i have a 06 volvo xc90, best ski whip btw, but i want to buy a ski rack for it. i dont know any terms for this subject but i have the parallel bars on top which is given, but not the vertical bars that go across.

For experts in this area, what is your personal preference?

I want to buy the clamps so i will need to buy a cross bar, but i was wondering if there are racks that dont require that. Or would it be safer to go with a top cargo box on top? I just want to buy something affordable. any advise

If you want affordable and simple, get a rack. Thule and Yakima both make great racks that can hold 6 pairs of skis. Go to Backcountry.com and use their search tools, that will help you with the rack itself and crossbar options.
 
If you can afford it, a cargo box is the way to go (Thule or Yakima). They have many benefits over a rack, including keeping your skis clean from salt/sand/road-grime & it can also be used as extra cargo space for anything that fits. For a cargo box you will need crossbars with clamps to attach to your stock roof bars.

I have yakima racks, and they work great, but I wish I would have gotten a box. However, a box will create a lot more drag than racks.
 
I drive a volvo v50 and i've got a thule box on it and i don't regret it one bit. you can put skis and smelly boots up there after skiing, or really anything at all. i've filled it up during the summer for road trips as well, only downside is (unless you've got serious storage space) it'll be on you're car year round. it was definitely more pricey than a rack, but unless you're set on buying new there are a lot of good options on craigslist (in colorado anyways)
 
Step one: Sell XC90

Step two: Buy 1992 Volvo 240 Wagon with ski rack already installed.

Step three: Profit
 
my mom has a Volvo wagon style car and my dad just bought her a Yakima rack from the house board shop . com for Christmas. she loves it
 
Nothing affordable about roof racks. They all suck imo. Go with the rocketbox, the mountain town approved status symbol of getting after it. Plus its better for your skis.

Go to your local thule or yakima dealer, have a retail slave do the install.

Yup. I would never put a box on my WRX. The drag is bad enough with just racks on, I lose 6 mpg at 80mph. Driving slower is not a reasonable option. Plus if I get tossed around like a leaf in strong winds, and let's face it, Montana is windy as fuck in the plains and valleys.
