Need a song dealing with US History!

The song has to deal with something that happened in US History from 1890 till the present day. I need to be able to write a 1-2 page thing about how it deals with US History, including its impact on American Culture (if applicitable).

Most people are choosing like rock anti-war protest songs from the 60s, but I want something different. I was hoping to find a hip-hop, rap song that would be appropriate.

But any song that deals with something in US History from 1890 till now would be dope. Thanks.

dont know of any hip hop, but we didnt start the fire. i cant remember i think its by billy joel? probably wrong.

the only song i can think of is "we didnt start the fire" by Billy Joel but thats more world history then US history

your teacher would probably like animal rap by jedi mind, talk about how it is about animal farm and its comparison to communism and how absolute power corrupts.

Great Depression:

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Jay Gorney (1931)

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,

When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.

They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,

Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.

Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;

Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,

Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,

Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,

And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.

Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,

Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,

Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,

And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.

Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

'Ohio' by Neil Young (Kent State Shootings)

'Where Were You' by Jackson Browne (New Orleans, Hurrican Katrina)

The entire 'The Rising' album by Bruce Springsteen (911)

The entire 'Living with War' album by Neil Young (Bush Administration)

'Goodnight Saigon' by Billy Joel (Vietnam)

'Leningrad' by Billy Joel (The Cold War)

'We Didn't Start the Fire' by Billy Joel (So many events)

'American Pie' Don Mclean (About several musicians)

One of those should definitely work for you, but if you need more I'm sure I have a ton.

i dont really know rap but rock has a ton of songs.

Gimme Shelter-Rolling Stones

Holiday in Cambodia-Dead Kennedys

Let Them Eat War-Bad Religion (written shortly after 9/11 too so its current)

im sorry its not rap but i really think you may have a easier time finding rock songs.

damn i used to have a CD full of songs like that, i listened to it way back in the day ha

jedi mind tricks - uncommon valor is about vietnam

honestly thank you guys so much. Some great options have been posted. I'm not going to use we didn't start the fire because everyone is gunna want to do that one.

I'm still thinking about which song to use, and I'm still open to more suggestions.

Thanks again

Haha I got a laugh..

But seriously OP, I think Mos Def's - Dollar Day would be the best for you. A lot of people are posting songs about the US or a history as a whole. But you're needing a specific occurrence, just like Katrina.

God I feel like I'm trying to pitch you a product. Haha

thats what i was thinking.
also the song "id love to change the world" by ten years after comes to mind as well. its from the 70's and talks about the government taxing the poor and giving to the rich and some other shit.... its an awesome song
i believe this was said but "ohio" by neil young is perfect as well. its about the kent state shootings during a war protest during vietnam
"run through the jungle" by CCR is another vietnam era song that may apply, but has less of a meaning than the rest and is just a sweet song

i know three are some rap songs that may work for you, but for a school project and a paper, i think a vietnam era song way be a lot easier to work with and many have deep meanings. if you want try to avoid something that everyone else has, use "id love to change the world" it was kinda a one hit wonder and i doubt a ton of kids know about it.
hope that helped
