Hey there,

I'm looking into getting a new jacket. I primarily ski the east but i do take trips out west. I'm looking for a jacket thats pretty warm, will last a while. I was wondering if you guys could tell me some good brands or models.

Im open to any color, but I'm thinking about a black or a blue.

Thanks

Go to a store (REI, ski shop, whatever) and try some on. I like wearing a jacket with no insulation so that I can choose how warm to make it. If it's really cold I can wear a few layers underneath, if it's average winter weather I can wear one layer underneath, if it's warm spring skiing I can wear no layers underneath (besides a regular shirt). If you want to go with a setup like that, the jackets will be marketed as "storm jackets" or "rain jackets", not ski jackets. I would suggest getting one with arm pit zippers to further control temperature.

The one advantage to true ski jackets is that they sometimes have powder skirts. In my opinion that's unnecessary, but some people like them.

If you get a non-insulated storm/rain jacket I would expect to spend around $100 or a little more for something good, if you get an insulated ski jacket probably around $200+. Check eBay too, if you find a jacket you like you might be able to find it cheaper there.

If you're looking for warm and durable, an alternative is the Orage jackets, Armada depends on models, o'neill has some good ones, but it really depends on what you think looks cool!

A ski shell will beyter then a rain jacket. The cost of equivalent quality a will be close so for the added benefits on a ski shell it's worth it. And if you don't think a powder skirt is worth it you need to find more powder.

honestly if they had sizes that fit me i would wear sabek or saga maybe but north face is good i agree with him^ ski shells are better and they are good for rain and camping and hiking and mountain biking

The new salomon tall fit coat would be the shit if you're looking for a baggy, insulated coat:

It's called the Sashay, and I would pick one up in an instant if I didn't have a perfectly functioning 4XL Reflex.
