Need a new car that meets budget

So I take my drivers test in 3 days and I need a car to get around. Since I live in montana i'll need something that will perform in the winter conditions. My budget is $4000-$5000. I was looking at Ford's Expidition and Explorer and I don't want a subaru. You have to pay out the ass to get a cool one, so NS what are your suggestions?

not a Ford Expedition because it may be cheap, but you pay "out the ass" for gas

80's toyota pickup xtra cab truck or 4runner

jeep cherokee with the 4.0. with the 5speed you can manage about 23-24 on the highway, with the auto it will be around 20-21. Plenty of room for 4, or 5 if you cram plus gear. Great 4x4. They are a dime a dozen too. Cheap to work on too. 4.0 I6 with the aw4 auto trans is bulletproof.

You could probably get a decent F-150 4x4 for that kind of money.
