ND Filter Suggestions

Any recommendations on variable neutral density filter's you have been using or have heard perform well? Gonna be purchasing one soon for my GH3 with a Olympus12-40mm lens. I was looking at the Tiffen 62mm Variable Neutral Density Filter found on B&H

Just wanted to see if anyone had any other recommendations.

VariNDs aren't the greatest option, I did it for a year and found it to work nicely but my overall image wasn't the best it could be. These filters tend to have issues because you're basically putting together a couple different pieces of glass and moving them around to get the right nd level. I found myself limited to only about 1/2 of what the nd could do without getting weird blotches or darker/lighter areas in my image.

The next year I switched to a 1.2nd and was much more satisfied with the results. I had to adjust other aspects to tweak my image, but I liked the result more than a variND.

Thanks eheath! So you're saying I should go with that instead of a variND? What are all the components/required parts I'd need for that? And any suggestions on what to get? My price range is pretty lenient.

1.2 is just the number that defines the strength of the ND, i found 1.2 was a good amount for bight sunny days.

you can buy packs of .3, .6 and ,9 and mix and match them for different strengths as well.

I highly recommend you get a step up ring for your lens if it'll work for the zoom without vignetting and make the front effectively 77mm threads and do the same for all your other lenses so you only need to get one set of nd's and can slap it on every lens you own

Emphasis on this right here OP. Step up rings will make your life easier, fact.
