Navigation and Header

Hey All,

Working on the new header and navigation and wanted to get some feedback from you. We're looking to move to a two-tiered horizontal menu system to replace the dropdowns. The goals are to have a more flexible menu system for us, and to abolish the drop-downs which can interfere with lower page elements such as flash video players. The content area is small enough as it is, so the fewer intrusions or accommodations we have to make, the better.

Uploaded a couple of mock-ups here:

Obviously the colours and styling aren't final, but hopefully you get the idea.

As far as organization of the navigation goes, we're going to add a couple of headings and rearrange some of the links. A draft list is below, please let us know what you think!

Good changes, took me a few time to see the deference between the 2 mock-ups. If I were you I would take number 2, every other change i have nothing to complain about.

In number one i really liked how the Forum was highlighted, and I think it looks fantastic, and is that a new look at a new front page? Looks great, you guys are amazing. It would be cool if they were adjustable, that way you could have your favorites on the left and in view?

It would be super duper slick if you moved 'Ski Gabber' and 'Non-Ski Gabber' to be centered right under the Forum link so the mouse has less distance to travel sideways to get to either link. Then I'm less likely to roll over 'News' and change the sub menu to the news sublinks when I want the forum.

Same for the other ones. Move the most popular sublinks to be right under their headings. Less mouse moving, less likely to hit a wrong link when zooming through NS without thinking.

Hopefully that won't scew up the ordering of links on other parts of the site.

Definitely going to do that for the more popular items. The Pictures and Videos links will be directly under the Media heading.

If you have any other specific links you'd like to see prioritized this way just let us know.

yes but please keep them threads! i cant stand gearswap or any of that shit, wayy to impersonal. nothing like buying gear in the threads....

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. We'll be working on the styling and finalizing the details over the next couple of weeks. Keep your suggestions coming though, we've got some good stuff!

Guess i'm slightly outvoted on this, but i like number two better. The angles are rad, and number one reminds me of 2002.

if you're keeping with the industry standards and moving towards making the site "web 2.0" you are going to want to go rounded, and my also want to consider giving the buttons a three dimensional and glossy look. also, you could do something to the rollovers for the menus if you're keeping that, cause right now they are about as basic as it gets with rollover menus.
