I agree with other posts that it will not kill skiing as a whole. The real question is how it will change slopestyle.
Halfpipe snowboarding has changed - in 2010 many riders skipped contests where there was only an 18ft pipe, due to concerns about it not being "olympic standard". Check out Danny Davis's run in the Breck dew tour that season, it was still bad ass even in an 18fter. This last season there were no more big comps on 18fters. So any resort that invested in an 18fter that doesn't have the means to move to an 22 is now left out - see Mt. Snow losing dew tour.
How will standards and specifications on courses and tricks in slope change? Hopefully skiing's top athletes will stand up to the FIS and IOC and also the judges to keep slopestyle open to change and innovation. Terje has stood strong for snowboarding, will skiers have the same love of the sport to put aside personal goals for the good of the sport if it comes down to it? I hope so.
