My ski pant company

What's up NS, story time. Back in January of 2020 a few of my friends came to me asking to help them create a company. They wanted to create skate decks and print some hoodies and pop them up on a website. It was to be called "Manaic". I don't skate but I thought it sounded fun to learn how to create clothes and to understand how a company runs. We painted some decks and started making an attempt to sell them. I was put in charge of the whole company, and my friends did the art. The company grew and grew and after a year we were shipping clothes and decks around the country. I didn't know anything about skating, but I love making clothes and running a business. I wanted to sew patches we made onto clothes so I bought a sewing machine. I am only 17 so when I was learning how to ski it was the mad bag, era. You all remember, 5xl tall tees over a huge saga hoodies with skull candy headphones on. I loved watching style. Not only the skiing but the clothing they wore. Naturally I tried to sew up pants in my basement. I made a few pairs of pants, messing around with different shapes and measurements until I found exactly what I wanted. These pants turned out sweet but not to the quality level I wanted to sell. I realized the company needed change. It had no passion or purpose behind it. I am so involved with skiing that I wanted to get more involved with the community. I wanted to continue the brand because I enjoyed it, but the whole brand needed a restart. I could not create a product and brand I am passionate about if I am not remotely passionate or involved in the sport I am catering to. I stopped posting on instagram and closed down the website until I had a product I truly believed in. I rebranded the company Maniac Freeski and started over. So learned how to make a tech pack and spent 10 months designing working with different factories until I created exactly what I wanted. We built our dream ski pant. I wanted a pant that was really baggy, but didn't have the waist of a 3xl pant. I also struggled to find a pair of bibs baggy enough without going so huge it didn't fit right in places. I am so proud of how the pants came out. I am currently rebuilding the website. The first generation of pant will go live on the website within the next week or so. I put so much passion into making them so I hope you like them. The pants at first will be only be availably in one size, hopefully that will change soon. The bib strap is very adjustable so that fit a majority of people. I have friends short than me (5 7) rocking them and the are just a bit long, and friends that are 6 foot and they still fit fine. The pants have one vent per leg, one hand pocket per leg, a zipper pocket on the bibs, one zipper pocket per leg, one cargo pocket per leg, and two cargos on the back. The pants also have reinforced thinker material all the way around the bottom, and at the the ankle area. The pants are very baggy but not ridiculous. The pants are a decently thick 2 layer material. The inside layer has an elastic at the ankle that works perfect with every ski boot I have tested it on. The price is not final yet but I am hoping to have the pre order be at $150. I am trying to make them affordable as possible. I want to continue to make them better every generation, along with come out with new products. I want to support local events and projects anyway possible. The instagram is @maniacfreeski. If you have any questions or want more photos please reach out!

At this rate there’s gonna b more ski pant companies than skiers

pants look great tho

Yah it’s sick to see a increase in small ski business. Being able to buy from people who actually ski and are in the freestyle community just makes me happy.

Company is still in progress, things are taking a long ass time to come together but it is still a work in progress, hoping to have some skis built this summer but money and time are very short

Already thinking about getting these if there out before fall. I like stuff other people don't have and I've been rocking the classic Amazon artix pant for three years now and I ripped them in two spots cuz to small one in the crotch and one on the knee.

Per orders should start within the next week or so. Planning on doing the actual release with stock in early fall or potentially earlier. I'm trying to get everything out as fast as possible but it all depends on how clean pre orders and manufacturing go.

I agree. I wanted the pants to maintain the shape when you ski so they don't shrink into long underwear when go above a walking pace. I also didn't want them to feel really heavy when you wear them though. I tried to find a good middle ground where they feel lighter on your shoulders, keep shape, and are still durable.

I don't get people. wtf is that comment. There are people wich sew all their pants and the people complain that they are to expensive. And now your hating on people who make their pants in china and are cheaper. I don't get what you want. Stop always complaining!

I don't respect privileged assholes who use their daddy's concentration camp labor connections to pretend like they accomplished something. Wow, cool. You sent a drawing over to China and they quoted you at $15 per unit and you're selling it for $150. Wow, great job! I bet those Uyghurs are really loving the extra business!

Skierman wins again, you guys are retarded I swear.

Sick pants tho, would you ever do a custom order?

Dear NS I'm sorry for writing 7000+ paragraphs. They're annoying and nobody reads em.

Anyway op I skimmed over that mess of a brain dump your got here.

They look decent but what's the material? Specifically waterproof/permeability ratings? If the waterproof rating is garbo, you're not gonna even get off the ground without killer design looks and a cult following. Burlington coat factory has cheapo $30 bibs every year that many look sick but just don't have good waterproofing; I used a pair I bought there for 5 yrs.

Also is this a shell or also have insulation?

If so what insulation did you use and how much?

Consider adding recco reflectors to the pants; probably not too expensive in bulk. I know I know I know NS don't say it. It's just a nice extra thing to have that a lot of manufacturers do. I realize without an avalung or extremely good luck it's worthless to life but hey its a cadaver recovery tool that most resorts employ. Also realize op is probably marketing to park but that's still a niche at the end of the day if you think about total percent of skiers.

Edit: this design MUST have clinching ability or elastic on boot cuff (underneath the outer shell). Fucking hate pants that don't do this. Snow in boots sucks and it also doubles as an easy way to roll up pants to walk through the lot without fraying the bottoms.

I totally agree with everything you just said. The pants are 10k for both waterproof and breathability. The pants are a 2 layer nylon shell, so no insulation. They are pretty thick, so little warm, so I have vents on the inside legs. At the bottom seem and around the ankle there is a re-enforced thicker and more durable material, so not very water proof, but it is at the base of the pant, so it is at the base of your boot, so you won't notice. I was just focused on getting that area very durable, not super waterproof. The bib has the same water proof/ breathability rating as the rest of the pant. There is an elastic on the inside layer at the boot cuff. I also really really hate when pants don't do that so I needed it. I have skied wet pow days and deep slush and stayed dry. I also had heavy crashed and wrapped my self on rails for about 30 days straight and they are holding up great. No tares or anything. If you have anymore questions please ask!

Ok one more question, I am very weird and just ski in jeans and Minnesota only has about three months where you actually need snow pants because January and February and December are usually-15.

Do you think they are warm enough for-15 and a little wind chill? if so they are pretty much exactly what im looking for. Lmk

Honestly, the material is thick, but -15 is ridiculously cold. I would probably go with an insulated pant instead. I'm out in Colorado so it never gets close to that cold. I have not skied in them below like 15 degrees because is actually never got below that this whole ski season. They kept me warm then, but -15 is a whole other level. They would probably work if you layered a bit underneath, but I have never even experienced something that cold before.

Oh nice, only other suggestion would be vents on inside and outside. Can't stand when only on one side. Air gotta flow through

I think he said they just haven't been tested below that temp. It's not like all of NS is skiing in frigid New England or MT/northern Idaho either. 15F is pretty damn good for a shell and nothing else. Most of us probably use shells anyway. Ever heard of the baker bib? Holds up with just thermal leggings down to 15F at least. Layering is key for any outdoor activity. If you're not doing that, you're a noob. noooooooooooob

Dude -15 is actually cold? Why do I live here again. I was snowboarding in jeans -25 at trollhougen. And they were blowing snow so it stung. It got -55 in 2015 and our power went out so I had to go and start the generator outside.

If you do some proper layering a shell pant should work fine. If you want to give them a go I am super interested in how warm you stay in temps that cold. Definitely with some nice layers you would be fine but you seem to probably handle mad cold way better than me so maybe you would be fine with less layers.

Cool if the bib was removable

I kinda want to in the future but every bib I owned where the bib zipped off the zipper kinda bothered me it was zipped off for some reason. I don't know if it was just the pants I had or everyone had that experience.

Just released the pants on the website. The website is maniac.supply. If you decided to help me out and pre order the pants will arrive in early fall/ late summer. I'm going to though in some goodies for everyone that pre orders. If you have any questions just ask!
