ALTA

personally i liked snowbird over alta. more variety and just bigger. but alta is fun too. honestly just get the pass to both they are connected.

so my dad got the chance to go out to salt lake city for business and managed to sneak a day of skiing in in 4 feet of pow and snowbird. he said it was amazing. he also said that if we were gonna go then we would just stay in salt lake and drive up everyday cus its only about 30 minutes and then theres stuff to do at night. he also said that all the locals said to go to solitude on a pow day because not many people ski there compared the alta, snowbird, park city, and the canyons.

the disadvantage to staying in SLC is if it really dumps they close the canyon and then you are screwed.

I prefer Alta over Snowbird. If I were just doing the inbounds thing for a vacation I might do snowbird though, as one of the reasons I like Alta is the slackcounty access.
Like is said above, they are connected so you might as well do both

the problem with Solitude is the lifts blow.... (literally) basically if you want the goods be prepared to ride multiple non detachable lifts.

some might not agree with this, but in terms of getting the most skiing possible i would pick brighton over solitude. brighton lacks the terrain that solitude offers (IMO) but being able to take one detachable lift makes it more worthwhile to me.

also if you are going to be staying in SLC i would recommend renting a 4WD vehicle. as they will restrict BCC and LCC to 4wd only if the road conditions warrant. or you can always take the bus up.

Alta/Snowbird is probably you best choice, but also consider Snowbasin in Ogden for similar terrain, excellent snow and minimal crowds.

id say Alta. i went out there a few seasons ago and i found the conditions at Alta better than the ones at Snowbird. but if you can, get a pass that works for both and alternate, worked out pretty good for me.

Im actualy heading out there this week and this is how i think about the two Snowbird is more of a tree skiing mountain which generally helps on the days when its dumping.

alta is more of a bowl mountain between devils castle and ballroom witch are generally closed until the next day when everyone goes and skis it up fast.

In my opinion there no better day then skiing 3 feet of pow off of gad 2 at snowbird

So my choice would be snowbird but deffinetly get a connection pass for one day (they cost alot)

Alta and Snowbird are both amazing. The Cirque at Snowbird has a whole load of amazing runs dropping from it, but Alta is sick too. Snowbird allows snowboarders, and Alta does not, but the skiers at Alta will kill you for two inches of powder, whereas it is a little more mellow at Snowbird. I'd say go Snowbird and, assuming you're out for more than just a few days, get the Alta add-on to your ticket on one or two days. It'll be epic for sure- here are some pictures of me shredding during Spring Break at Snowbird last year:

YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WHEREVER YOU GO.

Its like saying which child should I let live?

you should get an altabird ticket and go to both.....i have never had so much fun in my life while skiing at Snowbird and Alta.

If you wanna get picky. Alta has a few spots that require x-county skiing if you don't build enough speed, although Snowbird has one right by basswards or whatever its called. But Alta had maybe one or two other spots.

The Little Cloud lift at Snowbird is a little slow? But than again so is the wildcat at Alta.

I think you should just let me be your parents son.

The problem with the bird on a powder day is that ,because of the avalanche danger, they will only open portions at a time, so everything gets tracked out very rapidly on the areas that are available. Then a new lift will open and every one will zoom over there, and then that gets tracked out. On top of that unless you have inside info or are really lucky, plan on waiting in lines. Its frustrating because it can make a powder day really stressful when it should be anything but.
Alta will open more lifts at once so the crowds are more dispersed and there is less of a urgency to rush all over the place to get the fresh lines. At brighton or solitude this problem does not exist but you sacrifice the more extreme terrain and vertical feet of lcc.

if there is powder solitude is sick there are usually no lines and powder all day with great terrain

rent a snowmobile. thats the wat to go, pick your own lines, mountains, anything. the west is yours, grab it by the balls.

get a combo pass, but wherever you end up, get there as early as you can to get freshies. either way you'll be stoked. or just hit up panda express. that shit is as good as any pow day.
