My knees

Hey so i was walking around earlier and my knee just gave out on me. For those who have had any knee problems, what is the best way to prevent any knee injuries on the slopes and are there certain activities I should do/avoid to keep my knees healthy and strong?
 
Have you ever injured that knee before?

The knee is supported by the surrounding muscles in your leg, especially your quad. Get your quads hard as a rock. Look up exercises on how to isolate the different parts of the quad, and go all in.

Aside from quad strength, overall balance and stability exercises are important. Look up knee stability exercises using a Bosu ball.
 
If your primary concern is the long term health of your knees, you need to quit skiing.

Otherwise, Park_Ranger is on it... just stay fit, healthy and flexible...and avoid doing stupid shit.
 
Strengthening the muscles that support the knee is the best way to avoid knee problems, that being said skiing within your limits, and avoiding risky stuff reduces the risk of injury quite a bit. I exploded my knee, and i can't really ski much anymore. It really really really sucks having knee problems, it prevents you from doing pretty much any sort of activities. Take good care of your body, and you won't regret later.

Mine does that from time to time. It most often happens after leg day, but sometimes it's just random.

Have you had any past ligament injuries? Even after PT, it's normal for that to happen sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it's happening a lot. Sometimes just stepping wrong can cause your knee to give out, but no need to worry!

As for preventing injury, staying healthy will go a long way. Eat well, work out, stretch regularly and all that jazz!

If you're not one for hitting the gym, get heavily into biking. Bike everywhere. School is 15 miles away? Bike it.

If you get into crazy good biking shape, your legs will be naturally strong heading into the season. If you're a gym guy then fantastic - but muscle around the knees is better than any brace you can possibly get.
 
Strengthening and stretching. Did I mention stretching? Super helping for me, my knees definitely don't feel as good these days, but stretching and doing some pre season training helped mucho

Absolutely! My knees aren't great. When I went to physio they recommended hip excercises ever since then I have kept up with those excercises and it has made a huge difference.
 
I get a wicked pain on the outside of my left knee if I go on long hikes or golf. It feels like any lubrication that makes it bend smoothly is gone and feels super stiff and hurts to bend. I read that it is related to weak hips and lack of flexibility in the hips. It's definitely all related. Everyone is right..get strong, get flexible, stay healthy.

Many knee problems stem from a quad/hamstring imbalance. Most skiers already have strong quads, but don't sleep on your hamstrings.

Leg strength and flexibility will help prevent knee injuries.

Maybe don't crank your binders all the way up either, there is a reason DIN settings coorespond to weight, height and age. You'd be amazed how good form prevents bindings from pre-releasing

start working out, build up your muscles and get in shape is one way to prevent hurting your self. you see all these pro athletes working out all the time and cycling on instgram helps their body take more damage. you might be a way better skier if you start working out and getting in shape. sounds stupid but look at all these athletes, they are not doing it for nothing

Hoji skied on 12din binders for a long time. My girl is 5'10" probly 135-140lbs and shreds (racing background)... I couldn't believe it when I saw her DINs were at 5. There is a lot to be said for "skiing light" and keeping good form instead of just muscling through.

OP you aren't squatting or deadlifting enough. Do that more, reap the benefits. Get your glutes firing too.
