I am interning at a newspaper company as a photographer. Today's assignment was to go photograph a local WWII veteran who had something to do with this plane, which is a B-17. For those of you who don't know, it is a WWII bomber. This one is called the Liberty Belle. The guy never ended up coming, so me and the reporter got a free ride. I think the reporter is going to still try to make a story so i submitted some other shots, but here are some others that i thought i'd share. some of the photos are through a dirty window, but there still pretty cool. a few are from the front most gunners area, which is directly under where the pilots sit. you can look almost straight down and see land, its pretty crazy!

I hope all of that worked

It could be me but is it actually a top whole where you stick out you head aka - no covering in some of the shots?

yea it was crazy! i popped my head out and my camera strap was flapping so hard against my kneck it left light marks haha. it wasnt one of the gunner areas, it was just an open hatch.
and although i didnt sit on the seat for the front gunner area (not sure what they are called), i was crawling around up there and could have sat there if i wanted. instead, i was on my hands and knees (had to crawl in) and stuck my head out there. its insane!!

I'd be scared of mad wind friction grabbing my camera. Nice job with the photos, you did the plane justice.

Thanks! I wanted to get one so the plane was taking off and moving straight towards me, but the airport wouldn't allow it. It would have been nice, but I really cant complain haha.

I'm actually a journalism major trying to find an intership, you're lucky. And those are some sick shots, I could use a photographer for my articles.

thats sick! those bombers have alot of history in them... check out the movie Memphis belle its the story of one of the very few b-17 bomber crews who completed all of their missions and were discharged from the army... amazing story

I am jealous man. That must have been super fun. Nice pics too. How do you like the internship so far?

the internship is great. i get to go a lot of cool places and learn how to take photos in difficult situations, so its increased m photography skill a bunch. i also get to borrow some nice equipment. the only thing that i don't really like is that i have to drive a lot. i get compensated for gas, but only $.24 a mile, so its kinda lame in that respect.

Where I live I'd be making money out of that deal... it's $2.39 a gallon here. Just say 20 miles a gallon, that would be $4.80 compensation a gallon. $4.80-$2.39=$2.41. So I would be making $2.41 for every 20 miles I drove.
But anyway, sick pictures man!

If you're looking at only gas, then yeah it sounds good. However, you have to look at the average repair cost per gallon used as well as the depreciating value of the car the longer you have it. If you look at all the costs you end up not getting compensated for all of it and lose money by just getting $.24 per mile.

nikon d200. the take off/overhead shots were with an 80-200, taken between f 5.6 - f 11, and the rest are with a 14 mm at the same apertures

so sick man. b17s are by far my favorite planes. did you get to go in the ball turret (the one under the plane)?
