On another note Djibouti has no proven reserves of oil, coal, or natural gas.. soooo yes there is a military presence there, but it's not entirely based on oil. I'm guessing it's because the region is extremely dangerous.
Also, USA consumes approximately 19 million barrels of oil a day and produces around 12 million barrels a day. The other ~7 million has to come from somewhere, Canada is actually the largest producer of US imported crude.
So, the military presence in the middle east, specifically Saudi Arabia, is mostly to provide support for the region. This goes back to an agreement made by the Nixon administration and Saudi Arabia in the 70s. The goal of the agreement was to keep oil price from being used as an economic weapon (post 1973 oil crisis). I can post sources, or more information if you'd like.
I went off on a bit of a tangent, but I guess my point is that this guy has a very narrow view of what's actually going on in the world. Without the military presence in the middle east there is a good chance things would be far worse, potentially so bad that he wouldn't be fortunate enough to visit.

I should run a marathon while chugging a beer at every mile marker. Maybe without shoes, without clothes, blindfolded, juggling knives.
Maybe not that much, but I feel like I should try and one up him once a week. That said my knees and brain are pretty shot which is why I stopped running years ago. I might have one marathon in me. I'd have to make it count lol
