My first skis.

So I decided I wanted to try skiing.

I weighed my options, and somehow I came to the conclusion that the best option would be to build my own. Renting first, buying used, or buying new seemed like inferior options.

So with zero experience in skiing or building skis I set out to make a press. Big thanks goes to skibuilders.com and their forum for all the info and know-how from those who went before.

I built the press from scratch. (not that there was really another option) Costs for that came to about $230 when it was all said and done.

I got the fiberglass, edges, base, topsheet, ect. from skibuilders.com. I bought epoxy from Entropy Resins. Finally, I bought 9-ply baltic birch for the cores.

Testing them out

Testing my new skis from nate myton on Vimeo.

Anyways. I'm super pumped to try them out for real. I'm currently at the airport waiting to fly to Portland. Then I'm going to Sun Valley, Idaho and I'll be able to give them a real test.

Specs for the skis:

177cm

128-97-128mm

Center mount

wow thats super sweet that you made your own skis. I'm very jealous. Can't wait to see how they perform on a real mountain

hahah thats fuckkkin sick
props on going for it and not having any experiencelet us know how it turns out on the big slopes

Wow thats sick, congrats on gettin all that work done. They look like you did a great job on em too. Good luck riding them.

If you are going to sun valley this weekend than i will be there too. MAybe i will see you shredding on your custom skis.

Nice job, they look like some sweet skis, and it looks like you did quite a fine job on them too. Props on making them and hope they work well.

Yea, forgot to add the rest. Ski materials came to:

$75 in epoxy, but I have enough for 2 or 3 more skis.

$50 for wood, but I have enough for 3 more pairs.

$120 for the rest of the stuff.

So 1 pair at about $160. And you could probably get cheaper epoxy. The resin I bought is supposed to be more environmentally friendly.

You can see all sorts of pictures from the build here: http://mytonskis.blogspot.com/

Feel free to ask any questions if I didn't address them in the blog.

"decided I wanted to try skiing"

And you straight up built your own pair, thats awesome man. Respect

damn thats sick. i think i might try to make some this summer in the shop. $500 isn't bad at all for a whole setup and skis.

you should email 333 skis and show them that you [with no experience] made a ski as good, if not better than their pieces of curved wood they call "skis"

To be honest he'd probably just be stoked someone else is out there getting into it.

He was a big inspiration for me actually. I almost bought a pair from him since it seemed like a cool opportunity to ride something unique. Then as I watched the videos he had made I began thinking more and more that I was probably capable of making a pair myself.

Fast forward a few months and here I am.

Chances are decent I'll try something like that eventually. I live in Michigan so not a ton of powder most of the season. I was thinking something short and fat with tip and tail rocker, but camber underfoot could be quite fun.
