my dream, that i want to be reality

I know a ton of you if i said i want to own a freestyle/ski and snowboard shop, you would say 'oh i want to too'

But for me this is the only thing that interests me. I live to ski, and the only thing i can see myself doing after High School is owning my own business. Why not combine the two? But i'll have a tough market to jump into. Especially in the area i want to open it. I was looking at maps, and february's FREEZE, they have a colorado section, and there is a perfect surrounding of mountains, in the Leadville and Aspen area. Of course, my guesses are there are tons of shops there, and in 2-4 years, when i make my move down there, there will most likely be more.

I dunno why i made this thread, maybe to open up a discussion as to what i should plan for, financially. Maybe in the years to come my ideas will change, but if my love for this sport keeps growing like it has, i doubt i'll want anything else.

Thread is open for discussion...

I was actually planning on opening a ski shop or a heliski outfit after college. It's defientaly a tuff market to hop into because commerical real estate is quite expensive around the resorts and if you want good business from tourists you better be right in the mix. As far as my heli ski outfit Helicopters are incredibly expensive. Opening a ski shop as far as inventory goes wouldnt be that bad shops get pretty good deals on shitty skis bulk from company's. But I dont know I think it would be alot easier with a partner so we could mass resources together or I need to find some investors ohh well I got a couple years left.

Since you are a new business a lot of companies will not sell you things on credit since you may not be around in a few months to pay them. Think how many different brands/types/colors of skis, boots, bindings, jackets, pants, goggles, gloves, hats, shirts, hoodies, and other stuff...then you need multiple sizes and more than one of each. You will need a loan for all this and banks dont give money away...you cant be a financial risk for them. Just graduating from high school with almost no credit you are a huge risk. You have no business experience you dont have a business degree or tons of money in the bank. Getting a partner is tough, since if they front all the money that means they are the owner you are the employee even if you are running it. Unless your parents sign the loan for you or something else. Your best bet is to get a solid business plan set up and save your pennies and find a relative or something to help you get the loan.

ya a partnership is your best bet but make sure u can trust ur partner...ideally it would be a friend of yours that you'v known for a long time, cuz u don't wanna get fucked outta of a lot of money

why dont u try to start in a new ski area? ive had similar notions and am currently investigating resorts that arent so known, or have expansion plans and shit like that. ik lookin into areas like the interior, rockies and kootneys in BC.

because in order to even think about purchasing a ski resort u need to have a bunch of multi million dollar investors just to pay for it...then up keep and all that shit ads on a few more mil

Well im in the process of getting an M.B.A for that reason I'm told by quite a few people that if you havea degree in business and write up a large and intricate business plan and have good credit, banks will be a hell of a lot more likely to loan you enough money to set your business up right. But I'm only a sophmore (20 years old) so its still a few years away right now im just trying to establish credit

i said 2-4 years, because BUSINESS COLLEGE!i'm not gonna go straight from high school, and i know what inventory i'll need, i know i'll need a loan. I for sure know people won't think i'm dependable (at first), but that doesn't mean i can't try to live the dream.

For every business started in America one fails so its 50/50 statistically but if you have a good idea and well thoughout the odds arn't bad

M.B.A.'s would help but nothing compares to lots of assest that the bank can take from you if your plan fails and you lose all the money the bank gave you. You would probably be better off starting a shop in a city than at a mountain, the ski shops in the lodges get the huge market of the tourists. Just have to find a city or large town with lots of skiers and offer better prices than at the mountains and better customer service after your sales to make sure the people are happy. Word of mouth is the best advertising you will ever get for ski shops.

I'm gonna be working on my photography this year because I took some really sick biking shots a couple years back, and I want to improve on those with a new camera (no disposables) and much more shooting (1,000 instead of 24 shots per year).

I also am gonna be writing articles again this year, ski related ones of course, for a local newspaper and news website. I just need to go and find a sponsor again, the local hill, Shames Mountain, said they would.

Lastly, I'm gonna be working on my graphic design a lot more to get some skills.

With all that combined... you might be able to tell that I want to work for a ski magazine. Not doing freelance shit, but like the guys that go out and watch the events, take photos, and write about them. I also wanna be the/a graphic designer for the magazine, for the layout and shiznit.

That's basically my life goal, if that doesn't go through, I'll be hoping to win the lottery.

once i finally stop bumming it, i wanna either open a true feeski shop or shoot ski movies. by true, i mean have every twin tip made for sale there along with most skierX and pow skis, im so tired of goin into a shop that claims to be a freestyle ski shop and they have 1080's and lines. that pisses me off.

its hard to stock every single type of ski because other shops have rights to different brands. This is usually a bit different in resort towns but the market is much more saturated there.

Good luck though, cause that'd be pretty sweet. Again, you should keep in mind that twin tips sales dont account for hardly anything at all compared with the rest of the ski market.

Oh yeah, and don't bother trying to Heli-Ski operation unless you are an insane mountain guide and a qualified helicopter pilot. No point highering a guy at first, you won't make money. Gotta start somewhere then expand

I think I'm gonna be a lawyer or something with computers. It would be so cool if FARP could actually make it big though. I would love to just go skiing and film all winter and then edit and do more filming in the summer. A shop would be cool too. It would be so much fun. Maybe when I retire from a real job.

Find a sick new ski area thats opening up and move there. Check out a place called Kicking Horse in BC. I guess in 10 years its going to be the new whistler. Right now its still a small little place

^ every company starts somewhere. And as far as the heli ski outfit. hopefully by then I will be good in the backcountry (never been theres no bc in west virignia but im moving to utah tommarow) and Ill be getting my pilots licsence hopefully next summer ( I've done two take offs and one assisted landing and quite a few lesson point to point after that I would go for heli license cuz they are alot harder to fly than a plane. But I would be the heli-pilot at the outfit saving me 60k a year prolly or whatever a pilot charges. Im sure I could find some local mountain ski-bum type mountaineer to be a good guide or maybe even convince some fairly known half asses in the industry. I havn't thought out the heli-ski thing to much cuz helicopters are like a million dollars for a bell 212a.

I chose the aspen leadville area because it is inbetween two paralell chain of ski resorts. I figured with good word of mouth advertising etc, i could get a reputable name for myself. Then again the idea about one in an area that is still growing is good. I'll be there before the rest, making me the most reliable, instead of jumping into competition.

don't worry about the market.

Instead, do what you love doing.. and the money will follow.

you might want to think about a more urban area than aspen too, while aspen does have a lot of money running through it with a focus on skiing, somewhere like reno would have a larger customer base and easier advertising opportunities... something to think about. try finding an internship before you do this, that's always a good idea... when ever i get off my ass or out of college or whatever, i want to try and do that for high cascade or some other heliskiing operation... i can see few better jobs than being a heli tour guide.

Well yeah im 20 but most schools have an M.b.a program that is 6 years instead of regular 4 year bachleors. so your getting all the requirements for your degree as your doing the upperlevel classes. But it's not like for gifted people or anything im not dumb but im certainly not a good student
